Dreamhost - my web hosting provider had another hiccup today. A file server crashed and had to be rebooted which resulted in all of my domains displaying a “bad_http_conf” error. They were quick in resolving the issue but I also had to go into each domain configuration and re-save the settings in order to get my domains back up and running. What a pain in the ass. Before Dreamhost I was hosting all of my domains at Aplus.net and never noticed any interruptions in service whatsoever, but they are overly strict with security on their domains and forbid certain things such as cron jobs and outside server connections. They also don’t offer as much as Dreamhost does. But I’m getting sick of all the service problems I’ve had at Dreamhost. I really want to switch to MediaTemple’s (dv) dedicated-virtual hosting plan but it would cost me twice as much and MediaTemple only offers 20gb for the entry level (dv) plan whereas Dreamhost offers 317gb of disc space - not that I even necessarily need all that much storage on my web server, but it’s nice to have. The big advantage of MediaTemple is that their (dv) servers are supposedly rock solid and have plenty of high-profile clients which trust in their uptime. But Dreamhost does offer more options per hosting plan. So for now I’m reluctantly staying at Dreamhost.

This morning it became evident that I really need to brush up on my spanish. The reality is Latinos are the largest and fastest-growing minority group in the country. In Los Angeles almost everything is printed in both Spanish and English. And there are plenty of people who speak very little English. When you deal with people in construction or hospitality it’s almost imperative that you know enough Spanish in order to communicate with people. This morning I had to rely on the 3 years of Castilian Spanish I took in High School along with that school trip to Spain in order to communicate with a contractor. I didn’t do too bad. I think I’ve retained a good amount of Spanish from high school because at that time pop music was incorporating Spanish into lyrics - such as the song “I Adore, Mi Amore” by Color Me Bad, or “Mentirosa” by Mellow Man Ace and artists such as Gloria Estefan and Jon Secada were popular.
One of my goals for this year was to finally become fluent in Spanish. I think I might start working on that now. So do you think I can become fluent in Spanish in 30 days? I would say a definite “yes” if I moved to Spain for a month and was forced to think and speak in Spanish everyday. But I guess it’s easy enough to immerse yourself in Spanish living in LA. I will also pickup a copy of Rosetta Stone - Spanish since I’ve heard good things about it.
0 CommentsAs of today I have completed the first week of my personal 30 day challenge to lose 9lbs and go from 20% bodyfat to 15% bodyfat. Both Heather and I have eaten very clean this week with the only bad thing being the white flour tortillas on our burritos. We have both worked out every day this week for 1 hour completing 4 classes of yoga fusion and two days of weight training. On our typical diet we usually have one cheat meal a week. For my 30 day challenge there will be no cheat meals until after the challenge. This morning I stepped onto our Tanita bodyfat scale and it read 177lbs/19%bodyfat. That means I’ve lost 5lbs in the first week of the program. That’s a good start. I haven’t weighed in under 180lbs for over a year now. So today I will be resting and recovering because tomorrow I start a new week off with a 2-hour yoga fusion workout.
Yesterday I discovered that not only do pinto beans taste good, they are really good for you. All beans are actually a good source of fiber and protein, but according to this article, pinto beans have the best nutritional profile. So I will be eating a lot more pinto beans with brown rice.
I also found this article in Muscle and Fitness Australia which describes a typical bodybuilder diet plan when they are one week out for prepping for a show. It describes how you can manipulate your body into shedding excess water underneath the skin to look more ripped. I might have to try this in the last week of my fitness program.
Food log
- 40g chocolate protein complex, 1 frozen banana, 2 tbsp organic peanut butter and 16oz milk blended
- Poquito Mas fish tacos and black beans
- 1 slice organic whole wheat/whole grain bread with 2 tbsp organic peanut butter
- Sphagetthi squash with a tomato, onion, zuchinni, ground turkey sauce
- 1 slice organic whole wheat/whole grain bread with 2 tbsp organic peanut butter
I woke up at 6.30 today, took the dogs out, fed them then proceeded to make my protein breakfast shake: 3 scoops of ISS MXPro40 chocolate protein, 12oz water, 6oz fat free organic milk, 1 banana, and 2tbsp organic peanut butter. This time my protein shake tasted so much better. It would have been nice to use some ice cubes, then it would have tasted like Robek’s 800lbs Gorilla shake, but be even more healthier. 11am I had a cup of Uncle Sam’s flax seed and oatmeal. 12.30pm I took 2pills of kre-alkalyn creatine and hit the gym. I hit the ab crunch machine, did a bunch of back extensions, then a pyramid set of pull-ups. After that I realized I had NO energy at all and started to walk out of the gym, but then forced myself to turn around and continue lifting with really light weights for a couple more sets on a couple more machines. I made myself just go through the motions to complete my workout. My back shoulder muscle started bothering me and now I’m worried I’m going to get killed in my yoga fusion class tomorrow. This fitness program is really kicking my ass.

I don’t think I’ve ever done this much cardio in my entire life.
Today the instructor started us out with some yoga inspired stretching moving us into yoga/martial arts cardio routines which always include the downward-dog pose which moves through a decline push-up to a back arch. I’m really starting to feel the soreness in my triceps and shoulders especially since I went through a bench press routine at the gym yesterday. Once again I find myself finding it hard to keep up with the cardio moves half-way through the session and I’m pouring sweat. After moving through some pretty advanced ab movements which I can barely complete, there is now a pool of sweat all around my yoga mat. Our workout has ended and now it’s time to find nourishment.
Food log:
- 70g Dymatize Elite Complex Protein
- 1 packet of Uncle Sam’s oatmeal and flaxseed
- 2 cups of brown rice and a small wild caught salmon fillet
- 1 packet of Uncle Sam’s oatmeal and flaxseed
- 1 cup of brown rice and pinto beans with onions, red peppers and sliced chicken breast
- 10g ISS MXPro40 Protein
I just finished a tub of Dymatize Elite Complex Protein which I overpaid for at NUTRIFACT in Hollywood (the stuff there is way overpriced) but the protein blend tasted decent and easily mixed in a shaker. I bought a tub of ISS MXPro40 from the bodybuilders secret warehouse in Hollywood - N101. This protein was on sale for $19 and was a good blend of different proteins, plus had BCAA’s and L-Glutamine for muscle repair and recovery. Unfortunately, this protein blend is SUPER thick. I tried mixing it in a shaker and drinking it, but almost choked on the clumps of powder. The stuff was so thick it was like gelatin. On the upside, it tasted decent - but I tossed out the remaining 12oz of the stuff down the drain.

Sometimes you just need to shake things up.
The only bad thing is that as an actor, changing your haircut means re-shooting new headshots.
I don’t think my commercial agency is going to be too pleased since they like sending me out for “young dad” and “young professional” roles. Oh well…
0 CommentsI’m a mess right now. My mouth is very sore from the impromptu oral surgery I had done this afternoon. I went to the oral surgeon today to check my teeth because the left side of my jaw is a little swollen. I had my wisdom teeth removed about two months ago so I didn’t know why I might have swelling. I figured it was probably an infection where my wisdom tooth use to be. Well I was right. The doctor told me that I probably got food stuck back in there that caused an infection and now they had to clean it out. At first this didn’t sound too bad. I thought it might just mean a normal teeth cleaning. But 10min later I found myself across from a tray of needles, scalpel blades and suture string. Basically he had to go in and re-open my gum to clean out the infection then attach a tube to drain out the rest of it over the next few days. So now I have a freakin tube sewn into the side of my mouth. They said I would be a little sore, but they lied. After the anesthesia wore off I was in major pain and had to go home to take a vicaden that I had leftover from my wisdom teeth extraction. On top of all that, my hamstrings are really sore from the killer back workout I did the other day. I’m just a mess.
Sunday I’m back in scene study class and suppose to be doing a table read of the play “High Heels”. Sounds like a comedy. I’m not sure if I’ll be up to performing on Sunday.
2 CommentsI try to avoid mentioning anything about my day job(s) on this site, but recent events have compelled me to say something.
HOW THE HELL DO PEOPLE DO IT???
How do people get up every day and go to some lame ass job that is totally pointless and devoid of passion and creativity? My motivation every day is that I’m collecting a nice paycheck which supports my Hollywood acting dreams. I live on the hope that one day I can go to my boss and say “I’m sorry but today is my last day. I’ve just been cast in a leading role in Francis Ford Coppola’s next film opposite Johnny Depp”. Without this dream, most of the jobs I’ve had over the years would have been COMPLETELY pointless. I’ve only been lucky in the fact that I’m really adept in picking up new technology skills without taking classes or even buying a book so I’m able to have a job that pays well. But I always end up resenting my job and my workplace. So in some ways I welcome recent events in which I was asked to resign. The office politics surrounding this event is worthy of a feature film. Everything has been - and still is very hush, hush. They are expecting me to disappear silently so that I can become a scapegoat for their failures. I feel a Jerry Maguire moment coming…
But a disruption in life can be good at times. It makes you re-evaluate goals, life, etc. It makes me think that working a “regular job” isn’t any more stable than being an actor. It makes me think that I really need to get my shit together and do what I REALLY LOVE doing which is acting and making movies. In the meantime I’ve started the process of looking for another day-job again. Although this time will be a little different. I am really going to look for a job that REALLY fits me and my goals.
Yes my goal is to become a well respected, well known, working actor.
But I could never settle for “just” being an actor. No. I have bigger dreams such as owning my own production studio and making my own movies and distributing my movies using internet convergence technologies. So I’ve decided the best bet is to get a tech/web development job at some film production studio or some other company which deals with entertainment and cutting-edge convergence technologies. That way I can still get a nice check but also hopefully learn skills which will advance my goals of becoming the next Mel Gibson (I mention him only because he’s an actor and a producer/director. Producer wise I’d rather be Robert Rodriguez who is totally hands-on, high-tech and independent from Hollywood).
ugh.
Why couldn’t I have been born to parents who own a production company or at least have a lot of high-power Hollywood connections.
Someone just needs to put me in a reality show.
1 Comment“If you wake up Monday morning wanting to go to work, then you are in the right career.” This is the life lesson I learned today from Donald Trump on “The Apprentice”. But I already knew I’m not in the right career. That’s why I skipped out to a commercial audition today for TLC. TLC is currently running these “Life Lessons” commercials promoting… the channel, I think? That’s the wierd thing about the TLC commercials. They’re going for this off-beat approach, but it’s so off-beat that I don’t get it - and I feel like I’m a pretty smart guy. What are these commercials promoting??? Well no-matter. I hope I book it. ![]()
Speaking about Donald Trump, I saw him speak at the Learning Annex Real Estate Wealth Expo at the LA Convention center over the weekend. He was entertaining, but that’s it. As for the Real Estate Wealth Expo, I learned a lot of interesting information about real estate investment strategies but was hammered with sales pitch after sales pitch for $2000-$5000 investment strategy kits and asset protection kits. It’s amazing to me that so many people were stupid enough to spend money on these get rich quick schemes. Ultimately, the only wealth that was gauranteed from the Wealth Expo was for all the salesmen who pitched their products and for the Learning Annex who lured over 50k people to the event at around $200 per person. That being said, I did learn a lot about different real estate investment strategies and asset protection strategies and will be doing research on how I can use all this info to my own advantage. It is true that the only way to create true wealth is to make money work for you and don’t work for the money. In other words, invest more, spend less, be a business owner and have multiple streams of income. For me, I’m still pursuing the Hollywood way which is to eventually create a brand based on my future celebrity status and license my brand to different companies for all types of different products and services (and also build my own companies). Either that or come up with the next huge creative property franchise like JK Rowling did with Harry Potter. Her creative property has made her a billionaire.
Anyway, here’s some links to resources I found which give a voice of reason to the over-hyped “One weekend can make you a millionaire!” Wealth Expo:
http://www.johntreed.com/Reedgururating.html (Checkout what this guy says about the learning annex!!!)
http://moneycentral.msn.com/content/Investing/Realestate/P77333.asp
http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/03_32/b3845105_mz025.htm (de-mystifying the hype around tax-lien/tax-deed investing)
http://www.bankrate.com/brm/news/real-estate/20050707a1.asp
http://money.cnn.com/2004/09/29/real_estate/investment_prop/gurus/index.htm
Basically to sum up all these articles, it is possible to become a millionaire using some of these real-estate investing techniques, but it’s just not that easy. Heck, you could become a millionaire with the right website idea. Plenty of people are. It’s just not that easy.
BTW, did I mention that I’m selling my “Get Rich With Your Website!” kit for only $2000 today? I usually sell it for $5000, but just for today, it’s $2000 and you will receive personal coaching over the phone too. (I bet you anything I could have got in front of those 20,000+ people in that keynote hall and sold them some “internet kit” for $2000. I could have made a killing. People were that willing to charge up their credit cards on the dream that they were soon going to be millionaires).
