7-30-03 : 10,950 days later… the scoreboard

Today I leave my 20’s and enter into the big three-oh. I can’t believe I’m that old. I don’t feel 30.

So do I have to be an adult now? Do I have to be more mature?

Luckily, I’m Asian - and I’m skinny which means I will always look at least 5-8 years younger than I actually am.

The scoreboard so far (since entering my 20’s):

Laid off 3 times, moved from Delaware to Utah to Califorina, learned how to “surf” a mountain, got fired for hacking a computer system, advanced from a lowly programmer to Technical Director, turned down 2.4 million dollars worth of stock options, rode the “dot-com” ride, got a commercial agent, got a modeling agent, got a theatrical agent, tried to hit-on Alicia Silverstone (don’t ask), tore my hamstring, learned horseback riding, was offered (and refused) a $120k “Director of Special Operations” dream job, got a dog, got married to my fantasy girl, honeymooned in Tahiti, went to the ER twice for panic attacks, got into spoken word poetry, started another company (this time with my wife), bought a house, gained 15lbs, lost 20lbs, had a small speaking role on General Hospital, landed a gig as a host on a late night gen-x show called “IZ”, auditioned and rejected for NUMEROUS TV shows and movie roles, tried stand-up comedy, wrote and performed an autobiographical performance piece, cried on-stage, grew my hair long, shaved my head, grew my hair long again, and overall, managed to stay healthy, get stronger, and not have any major accidents or disasters in my life.

Lessons I learned in my 20’s:

• “Adults” are not as smart as I thought they were when I was a kid.
• “Adults” are not as strong as I thought they were when I was a kid.
• America is not as smart or as strong as I thought when I was a kid.
• There is no security in any job, no matter what market.
• It’s better to express your feelings than to keep it locked up inside.
• My heritage is something to be proud of and embrace instead of hide.
• My wife is ALWAYS right!
• It’s better to be myself than to try to be somebody else.
• There’s a lot of stupid people out there in the world.

Harlemm Lee is “Fame”ous

A fellow co-worker just informed me: an Asian guy won on the NBC show “Fame”! Harlemm Lee came out on top as the best dancer and singer voted by America, beating out Shannen Bex a 23 year old blonde.

This is so incredbile and encouraging. Many congrats to Harlemm Lee who is helping to blaze a trail for Asian Americans in entertainment!

Bio hacking

Manipulation of the mind and body to achieve athletic goals has always fascinated me. Over several years of working out at the gym, reading countless fitness magazines, using my “Gold Card” at GNC, forcing down “delicious” meal replacement drinks and bars and experimenting with a myriad of “nutritional supplements”, I’ve found one thing to be true: you can transform your body just by manipulating your diet. Diet is 80% of the formula. The other 20% is athletic training.

Anyway, here’s an article from the hardcore bodybuilding magazine Testosterone outlining several different diets. Find the right one and transform yourself!

I hate needles.

I went in for a tetanus shot this morning. I figured since we’re restoring the house and dealing with many rusty nails, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Now I’m not a wimp when it comes to pain and blood (I’ve been stuck/probed 6 times by some idiot who couldn’t find the vein in my arm), but I HATE NEEDLES! I hate that the nurse/doctor has to stick this sharp, thin piece of metal in my body and keep it there while they inject medicine or draw blood. I always have trepidation when the doctor or dentist takes out that syringe. It makes my heart beat a little faster.

Why do we still have needles anyway? Aren’t needles outdated?

I understand if you are really, really sick, they need to stick you with an IV for fluids. But why do shots still exist? What happened to that futuristic vision of those vaccine “guns” which shoot the medicine through your skin? What about “the patch” can’t I get medicine into my body by absorbing it through some patch? Can’t I just swallow a pill? Why do you have to stick a needle in me?

My machine is running again?

Well, after searching through Google for hours, and tinkering with my machine for hours, it seems to be running again. That “ntoskernel.exe is corrupt” message went away after I loaded the “fail-safe” BIOS settings. The machine boots consistently now and ran for two days straight before locking up on me when I was just browsing the web. I’ve tested it by running some pretty intense 3D games and it runs smooth. It does however, crash consistently when I run 3DMark 2003. I also had some minor problems when watching a movie using the ATI Multimedia File Player application, but they were just annoyances.

So, to sum it all up, I don’t know what the problem is. Maybe the motherboard, memory, or video card?

I’ll probably have to build another machine by early next year, or maybe I’ll just switch to a Mac.

Front porch DEMOLITION!!!

Yesterday I finished ripping out the old concrete that had been poured over our wood porch! I could feel the testosterone flowing as I wielded the sledgehammer and crow bar and destroyed big chunks of concrete (grrr!)… (don’t laugh)! Heather initially started the deconstruction with her favorite tool (the sledgehammer), and I’ve been helping her for the past three days after I come home from my contracting (programming) gig. The wood seems in pretty good shape for the most part, but in front of our front door they put down linoleum. Underneath that the wood looks damaged - so it looks like we’ll have to replace it. Also, our front steps are concrete and are not connected to the porch - hmmm…

Today we will finish ripping down the bead board that covers up the original porch structure.

I wish we had a digital camera so I could do a photo journal…

Bicycle made out of bamboo

This is pretty cool - a bicycle with an asian flair - ’cause it is made out of bamboo! Supposedly, if bamboo is processed right, it is stronger and lighter than steel and aluminum. Check it out here.

RIAA sues parents and grandparents

In another disgusting move, the RIAA is now issuing subpeonas to parents of college students and the elderly. There’s more of our hard earned tax dollars at work. Filesharing is not going to destroy the recording industry, the RIAA is.

My computer is still broke!!!

I’m still experiencing problems with my damn computer. I took the machine apart and installed a 350w power supply and it ran pretty smooth for 2 days - then crash. Now it has trouble getting past POST tests. AND when it does get past the POST test, I am now getting a corrupt file message on “ntoskernel.exe” and windows won’t load. AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

I might need to replace the motherboard and memory next. Maybe the video card as well???? Damn, I don’t have the money or time to be dealing w/ this!
