Yesterday I was listening to the “B-Side” on 100.3 The Beat with K-Sly and Eric Cubiche and got a little offended. They were trying to get a listener to call in to claim his prize. When K-Sly mentioned the listeners last name was Chow, this prompted a stereotypical Chinese accent from Eric Cubiche, “You bang my head, I bang your wife!” and K-Sly joining in with racial innuendo.
WHAT THE HELL!?!? K-Sly is Asian as well and she is supporting the continuation of Asian stereotypes? Just because she is Korean, talks like she’s from the “hood”, and is a DJ on a popular hip-hop radio station in Los Angeles does not give her the right to make fun of Chinese people. Would it be acceptable for me to make fun of Koreans, or Japanese, or any other asian ethnic group? I think this is part of the problem. There is no real “togetherness” in the “Asian” community. Each Asian community view themselves apart, different, and/or superior to the other group. It’s a part of all our histories and ties to our Asian heritage and roots. Then there’s this whole “I’m more assimilated than you (therefore I’m better than you)” attitude perpetrated by some Asians (I’m guilty of that too).
Will there ever be a strong “Asian” community made up of different Asian ethnicities?
I don’t know.
“Will there ever be a strong “Asian” community made up of different Asian ethnicities?”
Sadly I’m going to have to say… not any time soon. While it’s true that Asians in general are proud people… it is also true that each race often times sees themselves “better” than the rest…
I’m trying to hold back saying that it isn’t really the case for Filipinos… but when I say that… wouldn’t I be contradicting myself…???
Wouldn’t I basically be saying that Filipinos are “humbler” than some other Asian races?
But anyway… Im sure that each Asian race has generalizations about other Asian races… as to their strengths and weaknesses in all modes of life… and that even unknowingly… these “opinions” of others are passed on to the next generation… what are we to do?
“racism”… and “inter-racism”, I think will never be completely defeated… all that we can do is look over our very own values and scruples… decide which have grown good roots… and prune and even dig out those with bad ones…
watch what we think… and always think before we say…
…yeah
[I think this is one of those times in which I try to tackle an idea that seemed so easy at first... but then -_-...]
oy… I hope you get what I mean… or something near to it… >_<
I agree. But I do think we all need to work together here in the states in order to have a stronger voice and to be heard. You are right though, it will take some work for all of us to communicate and work together. That is what I am starting to see and it is encouraging.
(This is in reply to the person who wrote a post on august 29, 2003.) This is DJ K-Sly from 100.3 the beat. And after being made fun of for so long,I’ve learned not to take everything so seriously. Yes I am asian and yes I clown around and joke about everything from asians to blacks to latins to rappers and singers. Everyone is definitely entitled to their own opinion. But until you know where I’m coming from, don’t say I’m bring “us” down. It took me a long time and a lot of bs to break into the american music industry. You were stereotyping asians by referring to how I talk like I’m from the “hood.” Oh but asians don’t talk like that right? So how am I supposed to talk? Maybe you should look within yourself and get rid of that anger you have retained over the years. And I bet you don’t like the “Yow can I write check commercial” either b/c it’s making fun of asians, or chinese or whoever. You will live a very unhappy life if you get offended so easily. And that voice you heard “You bang my head…” was from an asian talking doll not Eric which belongs to a chinese man who works at the beat. The B-Side producer is chinese/filipino. So you ask are asians representing. Yes we are. In more ways than you obviously will ever know. Because you are blinded by your anger and sensitivity.Don’t look thru one telescope. Asians make fun of each other just like blacks, whites and latins do all the time. Open your eyes. And most non-asians can’t even tell the difference between koreans, japanese, chinese, etc. So when I do joke, it’s because I can laugh about it now. I’m here and all those people who made fun of me, can’t look at an asian woman like a piece of sh** anymore. I do not apologize to anyone because my fellow asians, teachers, peers, etc. all had something to do with the way I am now. I will always represent not just as an asian and a woman, but as a human who can live a more free spirited life. So instead of critizing other asians and people, criticize yourself and your reasoning behind your anger.
I think the only one who sounds angry here is you. Maybe an investment in anger management classes would be to your benefit while you are out there “representing” and being all you can be?
“So instead of critizing other asians and people, criticize yourself and your reasoning behind your anger. ” - Sounds like good advice. Maybe you should take it to heart?
The point of the original post touched on an interesting issue. Is the idea of an Asian community something that shouldn’t be considered or even discussed? The issue is deeper than you, honey - move on. Your comments were just the catalyst.
And when you talk about fellow Asians, teachers and peers having something to do with who you have become - where is your personal responsibility for yourself and how you choose to present or, excuse me, represent yourself to the world? How you choose to talk is up to you, but when you put yourself in a public forum don’t be surprised if people comment. You are in a position to influence and reach lots of people, with that gift comes some additional responsibilities. But, from the tone of your post, I get the sense that your main focus is yourself.
Did I ever say that I was doing anything wrong? No. You did. So I always take responsibility for myself. Everyone around us does shape our way of thinking in some way or another. And yes the issue is deeper than me and also deeper than your comments. If you complain about everything, it can hold you back. Obviously, you were the one who sounded angry by attacking me. If you’re such a righteous person, why do you try to attack other asians. You have no idea what I’ve done for my community b/c you’re busy pointing fingers like you’re so perfect. You can’t take jokes, oh well. Get over b/c the world is one big joke. You don’t know what my main focus is, but yours seems to put others down. You are like many people in this world, always criticizing others. Remember, you pointed your finger at me off one joke. So you think you know? I agree with the fact there are stereotypes we don’t like. But it’s how you deal with them. Sit there and be mad or counteract with some defense. Mine happens to be laughter. The Margaret Cho approach. You may not like it, but who are you to tell people how to act? Are you an angel? The biggest sin is thinking you are perfect. What do you do for your community? I work with many asians in los angeles for the love, nothing more. Do not attack something you know nothing about. And I need anger management? When you were the one attacking? Think again. No love lost but you really shouldn’t bring others down to bring yourself up if you’re trying to be so righteous. T
And if you want somebody to respect your opinon, then respect him/her.
Yo, DJ K-Y, do you even understand how blogging works? Get a clue. I am NOT the owner of this site nor did I post the original comment that you responded to. I am merely someone, who like you, happened to come to this blog and read the original post and your comments. IMHO, you sounded hostile and frankly, you still do. Come on baby, where’s the love?
Hello K-Sly. I just want to inform you that you are responding to more than one person. The original post was mine, but the comments are from other people. So before you go off and continue to blast me, just realize that you are not responding to just me or my thoughts, but to other people and their comments based on my original post.
BTW, I do listen to you and Eric almost every day on my way home from my job. I’ve been listening to you ever since you won the DJ contest. I’m gald that you are able to bring your flava to The Beat. I was just voicing my thoughts on what I heard that day on the broadcast. Am I too sensitive? Sometimes I can be. But hey, I’ve done stand-up dealing with Asian issues and making fun of Asians. I’ve performed in two Asian stand-up festivals here in Hollywood full of Asian comedians and Asian jokes. None of it offended me because everyone was poking fun at themselves and Asians in general. But if a Japanese person made fun of Chinese people, or Chinese people made fun of Pinoys (which I am both), I might be a little offended. There does seem to be a general egotism within each Asian group which stems from centuries of history and fighting. Also, within America there is also this “I’m more assimilated than you” attitude perpetrated by some people. FOB’s don’t like Asian-Americans, Asian-Americans look down at FOB’s (fresh off the boat/import asians), etc, etc. I’m guilty of a lot of this myself.
But the bigger question is, should we as Asians, continue to perpetrate bad Asian stereotypes? That’s a big question the Asian community in Hollywood faces every day. If I’m told that I can have a major role in a big studio movie but I have to speak bad english with a Chinese accent and act like a complete idiot or complete nerd - should I do it? Does that not continue the stereotype? Should we not shy away from perpetrating old stereotypes and show the world something new?
Your broadcast that day raised some feelings within me that I wanted to voice and questions that I wanted to raise. As my later posting discussed “Asian Community Too Sensitive?” Maybe we as a community are too sensitive. But where is the balance? Where are those public figures touting Asian pride? (Not saying that you are not) And what exactly is “Asian” pride? Do we celebrate the fact that we all look alike because of our black hair, slanty-eyes and generalized “Oriental” look? Or do we have pride in our ethnic roots?
I would like to suggest a book to you - “The Accidental Asian” by Eric Liu. He raises a lot of these questions and is a very eloquent writer.
Well I can dig that. Honestly, it just felt that I was being attacked. Therefore, I naturally became defensive. I didn’t know who I was responding to because I’ve never been to this site. I do check out many asian sites regularly. When I came across yours, I was surprised to see that I was being dissed. Not saying that I’m perfect or never have been criticized. Believe me, it happens everyday. But I really do appreciate your last post. And I do understand where you’re coming from.
In fact, it probably struck a nerve more because it was from a fellow asian. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have cared much. So, if you’re wondering about an asian community, you’re chinese/filipino, but still what I consider my fellow asian. Back to my joke, it was never toward any particular asian group, although the winner’s name was Chow. The guy sitting next to me everyday, Eddie G, is chinese/filipino. I’m not a first generation korean, so I don’t act the part. Maybe I’m too assimilated. Who knows? But I am the way I am.
The subject about asians in hollywood compromising…I’ve been in a situation where my ethnicity was the reason for being hired, but fired for not conforming to what they depicted as what an asian should be. They wanted me to play a broken english asian character like Ms. Swan on Mad TV, but I refused. This happened at a Vegas station right before coming to LA.
I’m glad that we can debate and express our opinions. And in the end, we can come to some sort of understanding with one another. Thanks for the love. And I will be checking out your site frequently (to check if you’re talking about me–LOL!).
hey yo yo yo dj k-sly, i guess you’re so sly that you have to act or pretend like you’re black just like the rest of all of those dumb asses that are on dance 360. why can’t you act like yourself? you’re a SELL OUT and there’s not question about it. i’m sure plenty of people will agree with me. i don’t understand why you or other non-black people try to act black..know i’m sayinnnn” giiirrll!! what’s the appeal? i’m sure you’re going to get really far talking like that. try walking into an office or any store and start talking like and then watch how disgusted they’re going to look at you. you are sick and a big “DISGRACE” to everyone out there. alright, just “KEEP IT REAL” know i’m SAYINNNNN” GURLLL!!

You know I really hate how the Asian community works. Only the well-known Asian races like Chinese/Japanese/Korean/Vietnamese/ect. get all the glory. That.s why I.m glad that Filipinos are Pacific Islanders. And if you don.t agree with me and you say all this carp sayin’ how Filipinos are Asian because of some big deal to make sense or to try to correct me. Don.t, because I.ve herd it all before and I still don.t believe that Filipinos should be apart of a group that.ll end up killin. each other over whos the best or when a Filipino person dose somethin. and it instantly turns into somethin. all .Asians. do. I mean when the group of Filipino DJs came together and made techniques that everyone uses today people say Asians were the ones that did it. I mean don.t get me wrong Asians are pretty talented but let.s give the credit to the little brown people. Because unlike the races I just mention Filipinos are struggling to get where they are and to create our own sub-culture in America and the motherland of the Philippines. The youth is sucked into this whole notion to be Asian then become ashamed of being Filipino because of the lack of Filipinos in the entertainment industry. Most filipino actor play as Asian races on movies (ex- .Fakin. the Funk staring Dante Basco and Mark Dacascos in .Cradle to the Grave.. Mtv would play Jin.s music video . Learn Chinese. but they won.t even play .The APL Song. by the Black Eyed peas which happens to have a Filipino member in it. You see it now? Yall asian got it good and it.s F.d up.
_Urban flo .stay down, stay brown.
I agree with David and K-Sly. While it is important to be ever vigilant as to the greater purpose that many of us serve as representatives of our community, there is a difference between being aware and proactive and being overly sensitive and actually detrimental to the community’s progress.
I spent so much time in undergrad being militant and leading whatever AsAm cause I could find, that in the end I saw what I wanted to see. And the sad thing was that, I realized I wanted to see injustice, simply for the sake of pointing it out. How sick is that?!?
I eventually moved on to the greater community as an RA and found that the mainstream was ready to accept me, both generally and specifically - as a representative of several minority communities and an individual. Granted this isn’t always true throughout our immediate society, but the point is that focusing only on the negative often obscures the positive.
I’ve learned to laugh at myself and harmless jokes. While laughing along, I find that I have the opportunity to open up to share an ever so slight slice of insight into why others might find the joke offensive and initiate a development in that person’s viewpoint. Both David and K-Sly agree that there are still barriers to getting “our people” in places of visibility and authority and “we” need to pick our battles, to be aggressive in some and chill in others.
Change and progress is achieved even through the smallest steps forward - like having an intelligent and accomplished young AsAm woman on a popular radio station or a motivated and informed AsAm actor/comedian in the ranks of Hollywoods up and coming. Representation (aka getting your foot in the door) is the first and the most important step of all.
SUMMARY: Take it easy. Be able to laugh at yourselves and educate others at the same time. Don’t just look for the negative, or you’ll miss the plenty of positive opportunities and positive change.
Very well said. Bravo.

there’s no penalty whatsoever for the whorientals willing to sellout. the so called “community” have always been apologists toward these actor-mercernaries and say it’s the fault of the producers/directors, etc. and the excuse have always been “if one person don’t do it then somebody else will.” hello, what were worker unions created for?
unless there’s clear guidelines and community enforced rules against sellingout then there’s no unity. take the recent backstage article on APA mediaheads, more of the same apologist sentiments that keeps on perpetuating the caricatures whether be it intentional or not.
http://www.backstage.com/backstage/features/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1000615978
instead of yellowface, they just put the lowest cost minstrel willing to sellout. for those who’re hoping that by taking these BS roles things will get better for THEIR OWN CAREERS later on, got news for ya: they ain’t gonna change the system for you since there’s no incentive by them since you’re willing to take the chop-socky roles so willingly and pigeonhole yourself into typecasting.
why do azns keep getting screwed over? cuz there’s no pride in the ethnicity whatsoever. the kidz all want speaks engrish without any accent actors or roles that was not originally written for an asian actor to want to be as whitewashed as possible. GET A CLUE! most asians in amerikkka are FOBs, so what’s wrong with accent? are there still lamahs out there who tell their parents to speak engrish? take a good look in the mirror and see how your skin is yellow, not white!
MaD CHinK -
I checked out your comments on the asian american film board. Dude, you need to chill. You’re coming off as one of those militant asians. Anyway, I don’t agree with your comment that most asians in America are FOBs. I think that’s completely wrong. The majority of asians I’ve met and that I know have been born here.
What exactly IS the asian american community? What binds us all together except from the fact that we all have black hair, slanty eyes and generally look the same? It’s not like we are all from the same country or have gone through the same experiences. Even as asians we are all different with different backgrounds and different experiences. What is the common thread that binds us all together as a community?
Here are three suggestions for you - Mr Anonymous Mad Chink at UC Davis: Do something positive to change the way things are, leave “amerikkka” and find a country more suitable to your liking or just shut up.
why do i need to chill? did ghandi or martin luther king chilled when they saw injustice in the world?
i don’t want to bring your website down to my level so i replied on the pak-man’s website to your questions. the above post might’ve sounded vindictive, but the “you” is being used in the figurative/generic sense to those asian actors who don’t get it and keep being apologists for the system like that sellout who was in the background being one of the opium addicted chinaman…
if your blog is accurate, weren’t you offended at the word “chinaman” in one of your monologues?
“SUMMARY: Take it easy. Be able to laugh at yourselves and educate others at the same time. Don’t just look for the negative, or you’ll miss the plenty of positive opportunities and positive change.”
to the contrary, i’m not focusing on the negatives at all. i want to be an optimist, except reality always disappoint my high hopes for the media. i’ve read time and time again about this “being able to laugh at ourselves” apologist argument and it’s disingenuous as far media empowerment is concerned.
we cannot laught at something like “opium addicited chinamen” because it’s not humor that “WE” created. it’s the product of media moguls and racism to have “opium addicted chinamen” deemed funny by the mainstream.
Mad Chink -
(aren’t you perpetrating negative stereotypes by calling yourself “chink”? Isn’t that self hate?)
First off Ghandi was a pacifist and didn’t go around insulting his own people when they didn’t support him. Martin Luther King also used positive ways to affect the world he didn’t use name calling either. So are you comparing yourself to Ghandi and Martin Luther King?
Why do you say “bring your website down to my level”? I appreciate the sentiment, but I’m not clear on what you mean.
Yes I was offended at the use of the word “Chinaman” in one of my scenes for class but after discussion with my acting coach I still did the scene and used the word “Chinaman” because for the scene it worked. Does this mean I’m a sellout? No. I wasn’t doing it for money or approval. I had an artistic choice and I made it. The dialogue reflected truth and didn’t perpetrate any negative stereotypes. In fact, by me keeping that line in the scene, it actually gave me power as an Asian-American.
As for your census comment on:
http://asianamericanfilm.com/boards/dcforum/DCForumID15/73.html
Check out:
http://www.awib.org/content_frames/censuscompar.html
According to this report the majority of Asians in America ARE born here.
The census report you reference doesn’t provide a comparison (that I could see) between American-born and Foreign-born asians.
As for my “leave the country” comment, your answer is predictably “…I see racism…”. If you don’t like the way things are, do something POSITIVE to change it. Why keep subjecting yourself to the torment of living in a hostile environment? For instance, I live in the ‘hood. I don’t like some of the things that go on in the hood but if I just sit in my house and just bitch, then I might as well move, ’cause nothing is gonna change. Instead, I need to find ways to effect POSITIVE change - such as trying to get more involved in the community (and calling the cops more often :)).
Dude, in order to change the perception of Asians in America you need to change Hollywood. You are right. There is still racism in Hollywood. But why? And how do we change that? Bitching will only go so far. A superior product will affect real change.
Don’t be stupid. Hollywood is about money. If we can show that Asian actors are “bankable” things will change.
One last thing. I can’t believe that people are really against the book “Accidental Asian”. Once again, you want to tear a fellow Asian down just because he had a different experience growing up than you? You talk about “divide and conquer”. That’s exactly what you are doing. Are you trying to dictate what it is to be “asian” and what is acceptable to be “asian”? That book resonated with me because I have had similar thoughts and experiences. So do you think you are more “asian” than me? Do I care?
I am more than just Asian. I am more than just the color of my skin and the product of my parents heritage. I want to show my soul - not just the color of my skin.
Look. I myself fall into the “mad chink” role sometimes. But it’s a real negative place to be. I’d rather not fight with my fellow asians but come up with ways to change the way things are. You definitely raise questions that “we” need to keep asking, but fighting amongst ourselves will get us nowhere. Peace.
Your felllow APA -
David Chiu.
–>”Why do you say “bring your website down to my level”? I appreciate the
sentiment, but I’m not clear on what you mean.”
since this is your website dedicated towards furthering your career, i don’t see the
need to continue a rant on much ado about nothing here. asianamericanfilm is a
website dedicated towards APA media discussions and it seems more fitting over
there. anyhoo, most APA don’t really care about media racism — just the GPA and
IRA. i’ve only expressed my opinions in response to your “questions” on what types
of roles should APA actor-mercenaries take and if that contributes to the stereotype
caricatures. heck, if you don’t like the response then deal with the fact you’ve
put the question out there for people to answer.
–>”There is still racism in Hollywood. But why? And how do we change that? Bitching
will only go so far. A superior product will affect real change…. do something
POSITIVE to change it. Why keep subjecting yourself to the torment of living in a
hostile environment?”
interestingly enough, i just read this article that gives another pissed APA’s
impression on the current state of media affairs. how’s this for irony that i think
some of the views expressed on the blue-collar american are militant and serves no
purpose except as cheap jabs at whites? i do however, agree with much of the
rationale behind the reasons for keeping on perpetuating the media racism against
APA’s. WTF is this new “memoirs of a geisha” written by a whiteman and produced by
whites on a japanese tradition?
http://goldsea.com/Mediawatch/Fantasies/fantasies.html
i’m not bitching about nothing. i’ve already pointed out on the asianamericanfilm
forum of the need to support independent APA media like “robot stories” or “only the
brave” and rejecting the media racism and getting proactive to stop the racism thru
organizations like MANAA.org or asianmediawatchdog.net
–>”Does this mean I’m a sellout? No. I wasn’t doing it for money or approval…I’d
rather not fight with my fellow asians but come up with ways to change the way
things are…fighting amongst ourselves will get us nowhere.”
have i stated anywhere that you’re a sellout? i’ve only called out that background
bottom feeder who was one of the “opium addicted chianmen” and willingly justified
it via getting paid a sellout. i don’t disagree with the notion that showing
hollywood APAs are bankable in order to get more prominent leading roles for APA
men. however, you of all people should know that hollywood is extremely
conservative and only after somebody has showed something can generate revenue the
studios will jump in. which is why i say, support independent APA media and have
clear guidelines for when somebody crosses the line to become a bottom feeding
parasite of the “community.”
–>”So are you comparing yourself to Ghandi and Martin Luther King?”
am i so conceited and full of myself? probably, but who isn’t on the internet?
*cough*davidchiu.net*cough*
they’re only brought up to be used as examples of
people shouldn’t just take things for granted. is somebody like michelle malkin
just be given a free pass to spiel her hate and venom just because she’s “asian” or
do people who want to see real changes stand up against her and debunk the
anti-asian rhetoric? you’re reading a whitewashed version of history if you don’t
think that ghandi and MLK were sometimes militant on the level of malcom X — they
weren’t kind to the uncle toms and neither should real APAs toward auntie tans.
–>”(aren’t you perpetrating negative stereotypes by calling yourself “chink”? Isn’t
that self hate?)”
you live in da hood, so tell me what’s up with the usage of ni99a being by the
gangstas? it’s the same rationale behind your choice to do the monologue with
“chinaman” — reverse pyschology by rendering an offense term meaningless…
–>”I can’t believe that people are really against the book “Accidental Asian”. Once
again, you want to tear a fellow Asian down just because he had a different

what you are doing. Are you trying to dictate what it is to be “asian” and what is

thoughts and experiences. So do you think you are more “asian” than me?”
obviously i’m not telling you what is more asian-american or that the book
“accidental asian” have no credibility. i’m just saying that it’s an example of
self-hate to think that somebody is “accidentatly” asian, white, black, brown,
purple, etc. everyone was born for a reason and should be proud of the ethnicity
and heritage they come from. read “banana boys” if you want to know an example of
what un-self-hating APA male experience is about — add “american knees” while
you’re at it…
i’m not tearing down the book as the experiences and thoughts of one asian-american
author, but i’m tearing down the thought and rationale in the book of being
“accidental” asian. i do the same for the auntie tans books contributing to the
emasculation and eunuchizing of asian males, they instill a sense of inferiority
complex and self-hate into APA and that’s just not what’s needed. i’d rather read
about the triumph of APAs overcoming adversity and proudly proclaiming their
heritage and skin color.
–>”I am more than just Asian. I am more than just the color of my skin and the
product of my parents heritage. I want to show my soul - not just the color of my
skin.”
earth to david chiu, earth to david chiu, are you living in reality? i’m not
dissin’ on your sentiments and ideals of what a color-blind society should be about;
however, not that’s what i’m seeing everyday so i might as well point out the
hypocrisy and lies in the world than embrace a “pleasantville” opium trip view about
how the world really is.
–>”According to this report the majority of Asians in America ARE born here.”
from your link to a breakdown of APA numbers, this is the only relevant info i could
find:
“From 1990 to 2000, about 41.5 % of the Asian-American population was foreign born,
slightly more than the national average of 39.5%. Asian-Americans also had a higher
number of naturalized citizens and non-citizens than the rest of the population.
About 12.5% of Asians are naturalized citizens compared to the 9.4% national average
and about 65.8% are non-citizens compared to the national average of 57.5%.”
i think you have a case of the fuzzy numbers syndrome going on. the key words in
that statement is “from 1990 to 2000″ and i think that means something like the new
APA population during that time period that either were born or immigrated to the
US. indeed, how can it be of 65.8% non-citizens that 41.5% are foreign born?
–>”The census report you reference doesn’t provide a comparison (that I could see)
between American-born and Foreign-born asians.”
according to the official census report for APA in 2000 the first paragraph
immediately states that 7.2million APAs are foreign born:
http://www.census.gov/prod/2002pubs/cenbr01-3.pdf
indeed, most of foreign born can be said to be in america for 10+ years, but that
doesn’t preclude the fact out of 10.2million 70% are FOBs.
everyone needs to calm down. chances are, this isn’t DJ K-sly, but someone who is a fan. Margaret Cho, has no tactic. She merely has the same jokes that white ppl would use. Just because she is asian and says the jokes, doesn’t mean that’s she is accomplishing something positive. Quite the contrary. And it doesn’t help that she succumbed to Chris Isaac’s obvious fetish (who is currently dating Bai Ling, the lucky dog).
I just wanted to add, that although in general Hollywood is driven by money, it can’t be denied that sometimes, the only explanation is that it’s run by racist bastards. We need to go back to the days of “21 Jumpstreet.” It was ahead of the times, and American media has never again seen such an honorable show (come on. black police chief? Asian who defined cool, and had no accent?). And guess what? That show was definitely bankable.
Unfortunately, there is a new sheriff in town. One that consistently feels the need to castrate the asian male and sexualize the asian female.
Even with the recent “Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle.” Anyone else notice that whenever Harold (played by John Cho) got upset, he would whine in a really bad chinese accent? This was obviously something the director or screenwriter insisted upon). John has no accent, and if he did, it would be a Korean one. This was entirely unnecessary, and wasn’t even meant to be comedic (it was their attempt to be accurate, I guess). Forcing an accent on John, had nothing to do with money. It had everything to do with ignorance.
k-sly is a sellout hoe just like the rest of them. kind of name is taylor for a korean? she thinks shes black, and looks fake with her makeup and hair color. thats how all these asian bitches are, they wanna be white or black. she thinks shes both.

What’s happening everybody! This is K-Sly & I haven’t been on here since my last post, but I’m glad that Dave Chiu gives everyone the opportunity to speak up whether good or bad. THERE IS A DIFFERENCE B/W HATRED, CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM, AND SIMPLE OPINION. My particular post is in response to these following posts.
First, I want to thank Baby Fabs for sharing love.

AND AS FOR THIS COMMENT, I’M GOING TO “KEEP IT REAL HOMIE!”
{hey yo yo yo dj k-sly, i guess you’re so sly that you have to act or pretend like you’re black just like the rest of all of those dumb asses that are on dance 360. why can’t you act like yourself? you’re a SELL OUT and there’s not question about it. i’m sure plenty of people will agree with me. i don’t understand why you or other non-black people try to act black..know i’m sayinnnn” giiirrll!! what’s the appeal…”
THE REST IS POSTED ABOVE.
FIRST OFF, YOU DON’T EVEN KNOW MY ETHNICITY, MY NAME, MY BIRTHPLACE, MY MOMMA’S NAME, MY DADDY’S NAME, GET THE PICTURE HOMIE? “HOMIE” IS SLANG FOR YOUR INFORMATION, I JUST WANT TO UPDATE YOU BEING THAT YOU SEEM TO LIVE IN THE YEAR 1775.
WHERE DO YOU GET OFF SAYING I SPEAK IMPROPERLY? I DIDN’T KNOW THAT YOU WERE AN ENGLISH TEACHER. AND IT’S FUNNY THAT YOU JUMPED UP TO POST YOUR IGNORANT COMMENTS THE DAY THAT MY TV SHOW HIT. FOR THOSE WHO DON’T KNOW, DANCE 360 DEBUTED ON AUG. 30TH. AND THAT PERSON’S COMMENT WAS POSTED THAT DAY. THEY COULDN’T WAIT TO DIS MY A**.
LET ME GIVE YOUR LITTLE YOUNG IGNORANT ASS A BREAKDOWN ON ME…I DID GO TO COLLEGE & GRADUATED WITH A “B.A.” WHICH IS A BACHELOR OF ARTS DEGREE IN SOCIOLOGY. SO, I KNOW ABOUT PEOPLE LIKE YOU AND HOW YOU CAME TO BE BY SOCIALIZATION. YOU SEE, YOUR OPINIONS AND THOUGHTS WERE GIVEN TO YOU BY OTHER IGNORANT PPL. YOU ACCEPTED THEM WITHOUT THINKING FOR YOURSELF AND WITHOUT REALIZING THE EFFECT YOUR IGNORANCE AND NEGATIVITY HAS ON ME, OTHER ASIANS, OTHER RACES, AND EVEN YOURSELF.
MY FAMILY BACKGROUND…WELL, HERE’S A LITTLE SINCE YOU ARE SO FIXATED ON ME. BOTH MY KOREAN UNCLES GRADUATED AT USC, ONE IN ENGINEERING, ONE IN MUSIC. ONE MOVED ON TO CAL STATE, LA WITH A MASTERS IN MUSIC. THE OTHER TO VANDERBILT FOR LAW. ONE OF MY UNCLES IS A WELL KNOWN VIOLINIST IN KOREA AND IS A TEACHER AT A PRESTIGIOUS MUSIC UNIVERSITY. THE OTHER ALSO LIVES IN KOREA AND IS AN INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS LAWYER. I COME FROM A LINE OF DOCTORS, LAWYERS, MUSICIANS, AND YOU QUESTION ME? USING YOUR IGNORANT IMPROV LIKE “I IZ A AZN UH WOULD U PLZ HIRE MY IGNORANT WANNA BE BLACK A**. ”
PUH-LEEEZE, LIL ONE, SIT DOWN AND CHECK YOURSELF. DO YOU KNOW SELF-DISCIPLINE? WELL, GO TO BARNES & NOBLES AND READ ABOUT IT. MY IGNORANT UNEDUCATED WANNA BE WHITE/BLACK/WHATEVER HAS A BARNES & NOBLES DISCOUNT CARD IF YOU NEED TO BORROW IT. SHOOT, I’LL BUY YOU YOUR FIRST BOOK! GEEZ!
MOVING ON…I ACT OR PRETEND I’M BLACK? DEFINE BLACK. ARE YOU BLACK? DO YOU KNOW WHAT IT IS? DO YOU HAVE ANY BLACK FRIENDS? OR DO YOU ONLY SEE WHAT THE MEDIA SHOWS YOU? MAKING YOU JUST AS IGNORANT AS THE KKK. FYI: YOU PISSED OFF MANY BLACK PPL WITH YOUR COMMENT ABOUT BEING BLACK B/C WHEN THEY READ IT…WHOA! YOU BETTER KEEP A LOW PROFILE ON YOURSELF. YOU ARE LIKE THE KKK FOR REAL!
HOW DARE YOU NOT ONLY DEGRADE MY PPL, BUT AT THE SAME TIME, DEGRADE BLACK PPL. YOU MADE THEM SOUND AS IF THEY CAN’T SPEAK ENGLISH & DON’T KNOW HOW TO TALK PROPERLY AND IF THEY GO INTO AN OFFC TO INQUIRE ABOUT A JOB, THEY CAN’T GET ONE? DO YOU EVEN REALIZE WHAT YOU SAID? YOU SAID SOMETHING SO UNBELIEVABLY RACIST. YOU STEREOTYPED ALL BLACK PPL. AND YOU STEREOTYPED WHAT I SHOULD BE AS AN ASIAN WOMAN!
I DIDN’T KNOW THAT I WAS LIVING FOR YOU. DO I KNOW YOU? ARE YOU GOD? B/C THAT IS THE ONLY ONE I NEED TO LIVE FOR. AND I’M LOOKING FAKE WITH MY MAKEUP & HAIR COLOR. DUH! IT IS FAKE. MAKE UP IS FAKE AND HAIR DYE IS FAKE. SO WHAT! GIRLS JUST WANNA HAVE FUN. DO I HAVE TO LOOK BASIC FOR YOU? WHAT WOULD YOUUUUU LIKE ME TO DO? HUH? DID YOU GET ME HERE? DID YOU GET ME A JOB AFTER COLLEGE? ARE YOU GOING TO PAY MY STUDENT LOANS? ARE YOU GOING TO PAY $50 TO FILL UP MY GAS? DID YOU BUY MY FIRST HOUSE?
IF YOU DIDN’T KNOW, I BOUGHT MY FIRST HOME LAST MONTH IN KOREATOWN WHERE I’M ORIGINALLY FROM. I PUT BACK INTO MY COMMUNITY SO THAT I CAN BE PART OF THE POSITIVE. I COULD HAVE MOVED TO WEST HOLLYWOOD OR THE VALLEY. I DIDN’T MOVE TO BEVERLY HILLS. THAT’D BE NICE ONE DAY THOUGH.
AND DO YOU REALLY KNOW WHAT I AM? WHO I AM? WHO ARE YOU COMPARING ME TO? YOURSELF? I DON’T WANT TO BE LIKE YOU. I WOULDN’T BE WHERE I AM IF I WAS. IT DOESN’T MATTER WHAT YOU SAY OR THINK, I’M NOT GOING TO FOLLOW YOUR LEAD. I DANCE TO MY OWN RHYTHM. LEARN TO DO THAT. BE YOU. DO YOU. DON’T WORRY ABOUT WHAT I’M DOING. AND BY THE WAY…TAYLOR. THAT’S MY DAD’S LAST NAME. SO SHUT YOUR STUPID MOUTH UP. HE IS WHITE. SO I’M TRYING TO BE BLACK & WHITE? WELL, BUDDY, I AM HALF WHITE. HOW YA LIKE THEM APPLES? GOD MADE ME THIS WAY. YOU HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY, SAY IT TO HIM. BUT WARNING…YOU BETTER NOT DARE QUESTION HIM. SO WATCH YOURSELF. BUDDY.
IN CONCLUSION, I AM WHO I AM AND YOU ARE WHO YOU ARE. SOME PPL ARE STILL SEARCHING THEIR SOUL FOR ANSWERS. YOU SEEM TO BE LOST B/C YOU ARE LOOKING INTO OTHERS AND QUESTIONING WHAT YOU THINK THEY SHOULD OR SHOULD NOT BE. NO MATTER IF MY MOM IS KOREAN AND MY DAD IS WHITE, WHEN YOU LOOK AT ME, YOU SEE ASIAN. THAT’S FINE WITH ME, BUT I DEFINE ME, NOT YOU. I SEE MYSELF AS ANOTHER PERSON TRYING TO PAY SOME BILLS IN THE USA! BEFORE I GOT INTO RADIO AND TV, I DID NOT SIT DOWN AND CONTEMPLATE ABOUT WHAT AN ASIAN OR KOREAN OR HALF BREED OR EVEN WHAT A WOMAN IN SOCIETY SHOULD BE. I DON’T WANT TO CHANGE WHO I AM OR WHAT I LOOK LIKE. EVEN IF I CHANGE MY HAIR COLOR, BY THE WAY IT’S TOTALLY DARK BRWN NOW, MY MOM MADE ME CHANGE IT BACK
OR PUT MAKE UP ON WHICH YOU DO NEED FOR TV, BUT YOU OBVIOUSLY DIDN’T KNOW THAT. ANYWAYS…IT DOESN’T MATTER B/C I’M STILL ME. KATHLEEN TAYLOR, K-SLY, LITTLE ANGRY ASIAN GIRL, WOMAN WHO LOVES HIP HOP, BUT MOST OF ALL LOVES GOD. HE ACCEPTS ME. THAT’S ALL THAT MATTERS, BABY! WHO ARE YOU IS THE QUESTION. FIGURE THAT OUT. AFTER YOU DO, YOU WON’T BE SO CONDESCENDING AND SO NOT UPLIFTING. NO ONE IS PERFECT, BUT WOW! TAKE YOUR FRUSTRATIONS, STRESS, ANGER, WHATEVER YOU HAVE BUILT UP INSIDE OF YOU BY DOING SOMETHING PROACTIVE! FOCUS YOUNG GRASSHOPPER, FOCUS!
Oh forgot…and as for me knowing my Asian side. I’m very in tune with it. I lived in Seoul for a few years and can speak, read and write Korean. Thank you very much. Is that Black and White enough for you?
Wussup my fellow yellows! I would like to start on a positive note…
I am so glad that there are so many ways for Asian communities to communicate.
I myself have always been involved in Asian and Korean organizations to educate myself as well as others on such amazing cultures; despite my yellow, white, and red mix. However, it pains me to see that no matter what site I go to or what neighborhood I enter, it is Asians that are most critical and racist against Asians. As a matter of fact, the majority of Asian hate crimes are committed by Asians.
The truth is all cultures have their own attributes that make them special and interesting. I am an army brat and have lived all over the world, learning and living in diversity. These experiences make me who I am and contribute to how I act. Everytime I leave Seoul, I have a bit of an accent. My “urban” circle of friends influence my slang and dialect. This is me. Korean, Caucasian, and Native American.
To Urban Flo: I feel you on the pride in your heritage. Technics are the best turntables out and Pinoy DJs are some of the hottest out there. As a matter of fact, my sister, who happens to be KSLY uses them and is on the radio with one of the beat junkies, DJ Curse, who is part Filipino.
As much as I like to gloat on the struggles and accomplishments of Korea as a country, a culture and peoples; they are not mine to take pride in. Urban Flo did not create Technics, nor did I fight in the Korean War.
I graduated from Florida State University with a degree in Business Marketing on a full academic scholarship, I can be PROUD of this accomplishment. I passed my driver’s test, I am PROUD of this accomplishment. I am PROUD of the things I ACHIEVE.
I have no right to take ownership in the acts that I did not take part in. I will never be ashamed of my heritage, my background, or of who I am. And neither will my sister.
What is really sad, is my sister is a beautiful, strong Korean/Caucasian woman that has worked her tail off to get where she is, only to be criticized. I remember when she was living off 79 cent tacos paying dues as a DJ, despite our mother’s cynicism. We grew up playing the classics on piano and violin, which is what sparked her love for music. She graduated with a Bachelor’s but still worked a minimum wage job to pay the bills, because she knew that if she worked hard, it would pay off. She still works hard, goes to Church, does community service and donates most of her music to aspiring DJs.
I remember at age 5 getting spit on by Korean school girls in Itaewon, being called “Tiggy” (a racially derogatory word for those who are not full Korean; impure blood). I remember little kids pulling their eyes up with their hands calling me Chinese. I remember people shaking their heads saying, “white people,” under their breath.
I personally do not care what people consider me or what they are. My snapshots growing up look like Colors de Benetton ads.
I respond differently to ignorant attacks than my sister (as you can see from her posting), because she has been confronted with adversity in different ways by herself. I had my Uhnny to always protect me, even if it meant fighting. She still does to this day, with me, our family, her friends, her fans, and even her critics-that’s right she loves them too.
We should all remember that we are only human, sinners, and all come from the same place… God’s hands. How it must sadden him that his children are all full of so much hate towards each other.
Thank you David for allowing us all to express ourselves. Keep doin what you do with your fine Asian self, you are an artist and I am glad to hear that you determine what you will accept for yourself. Oh, and that empowerment is well deserved, YOU can be PROUD of YOUR success!!
As an African-American female, can I ask one question to those closed minded people out there: How do you act black? Black is a color not a race…….just thought you might want to clear that up for me……
Fellow asians, we need to stick together and build each other up. Our numbers are so small (in the US anyway), if we can’t even accept each other for who we are no matter how we act, how are we supposed to expect others to accept us? Like the Black Eyed Peas says, “Where is the love?” Life is too short for all the anger and hate. Instead, direct all that passion and intensity to positive things that will actually matter.
PS Good point “KyngChilli” - black is a color, not a race. Nobody can act black. Yes some people can act “ghetto” (if that’s the word you’re looking for), but acting “ghetto” can apply to anyone - white, black, hispanic, asian, etc.
“Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world - red & yellow, black & white, they are precious to his sight. Jesus loves the little children of the world.”
Andees I’m glad you see the point. There are far too many “for my people” out there and we need more “for all people” to show love to one another (african americans, latinos, asians, and caucasions) in this day and age. To comment on the “acting black” statement again, not all “black” people act the same so when you say something like that you had better know all “black” people in this Earth or else you’d be stereotypical……….and we wouldn’t want that to happen, now would we?
I came across this site inadvertently and felt compelled to write, because Kathleen (K-Sly) and I were good friends in high school and college. Her personality and the way that she talks is not an affectation. She is who she is and has always been that way, with out apology (you can take it or leave it). The crap written about her doesn’t deserve the dignity of a serious response, but I can’t resist responding to the comment about her trying to find a job and walking into an office speaking the way she does(I had a good laugh at that)…. please! From what I’m seeing she’s doing quite well for herself. Well enough that she does not have to worry about looking for some meager office job anytime soon. I don’t think that’s on top of her worry list, nor should it be. It’s like telling Bill Gates he needs to go back to college LOL. In addition, she must be doing something right to be this popular that people are writing in to either trash or defend her.
Kathy, you’ve always had a strong sense of self. Don’t let this run anymore space in your head.
Hey K sly, I don’t know you other than what I see on dance 360, and I can tell you aren’t the way these people are ranting. You’re the reason I watch the show. The show is otherwise ok, but you make it unforgettable. I’m learning how to be a be a b-boy just so I can come on and mac on you
Don’t worry, you won’t be disappointed.
But you know, i suppose that if I had a show and I received an adoration message, I’d probably think “what does this person know about me too”. Maybe its worth to say, when I saw you, my mouth dropped with an OMG…
K-sly, you’re awesome. I totally agree with you and really admire how far you’ve gone throughout the hardships. Being half asian, half caucasian doesn’t sound easy. As for me, being asian and dating a caucasian guy definitely isn’t easy among the asian community either.
i have a wide variety of friends and have few asian friends who i can relate with. Everyone else in my circle of friends is of different ethnicities but that’s what i like about it. I love diversity and embrace it a lot; however, the fellow asians around my area don’t believe so.
And to top it off, I date out of my race. Oh goodness, what a disgrace in the asian race! (SARCASM). At least that’s what the typical ignorant asian believes.
Like you, I’m not letting them keep living their opinions. I’m a second year at a university and is aspiring a college degree and possibly a masters. I admire how you work with an immense diverse group of people.
I have nothing but love for you-You’re hot, girl! Keep doing your thang.
We should all just forget about the Asian race, the Hispanic race, the white race, the black race, and all those other races because WE ARE THE HUMAN RACE!!! Let’s lighten up and just laugh about the silly things that separate us. =D
“Katheen Taylor” doesn’t sound too Asian to me…
yo dj kim, how did you find this unknown site anyway? were you searching for yourself on the internet to see how famous you are?
you must have a lot of time on your hands…
hey” white girl” she said her dad is white. did you even read before you spoke. duh! white girl sounds far less asian so you don’t need to worry what is asian and what is not. she has it in her blood, not you. don’t talk about asians when you are not.
this is to the dumbass fillipino urban flo. dood your a disgrace to your own race dood. talking about “other asians” killing eachother. i live in r-side and they is plenty of fillipinos here, and they all kill eachother. just the other day i saw on the news some 2 idiot fillipinos shooting a fellow fillipino in the face while robbing subway.(jee thats really smart) anyways if you ever want to talk shit on “other asians” get your facts straight and then post something thats actually worth while to read about. by the way i have no beef with fillipinos as a race… just dumbasses like you as a idiotic race…
and i know this is kind of a old issue, but i agree with k-sly. i know all of you fellow azns make fun of other race when theyre not around, and we can laugh about it. right? so next time you hear something like that on the radio just think i do the same and leave it at that. if youre still angry just simply turn off your radio and dont ever listen to the damn radio staion ever again.
Dood k-sly after reading all your comments i think im falling in love with you… lol. no really though sa rang hae noona!!! hehe. and dont let all these ignorrant peepz get on your nerves like that. they just so closed up in their boxes they dont see whats really important. damn close minded azn. really open you mind and eyez lol jp. oh and by the way i have a white uncle. no coment on him.lol
Really, I’m tired of all these bullshit filipinos trying to convince theirselves that they are not “Asian”. Be proud of who you fcking are..You’re Asian and nothing can ever change that. If you really dont believe that you are..I suggest you start hittin’ the history books, son..’Coz all the history is there..Our origins and what Asian groups we were descended from. So Urban Flo, before you downgrade Asians, know that you’re an Asian yourself. Be proud of it. One.
How to solve race relations:
- Koizumi needs to stop visiting Yasukuni
- Koizumi needs to apologize to China
- China needs to own up to the horrendous errors of the Cultural Revolution, Tiananmen, etc.
- Chen Shuibian should either be removed as president, get a frontal lobotomy, or the “evil Chinese aggressors” should hire a better assassin, you know, the kind that can actually hit a vital organ in a slow moving convertible during a public parade (btw, does anyone remember the last time an American President rode in a open top convertible?)
- China should apologize to Korea, everyone should really… Korean History is sad
Indonesia, Malaysia, Phillipines, Burma, Laos, Thailand are a lil different… not sure if we want collective identity or want to try…
An interesting question is what is the future of Asian descendents in countries like the US? Is it to completely assimilate into one of the local cultures (either into mainstream WASP, as most do, or into the only permanently established alternative, African American culture), or is it to remain a separate culture in the US? In fact, this is a question for all minorities in the US, including the African Americans: melting pot or tossed salad?
The question is of a descriptive nature, not of a prescriptive nature. In other words, I am not interested in a prescription or course of action for a particular future. I just wonder which way it will be. In the past, complete assimilation has been only a matter of time, but mores have changed since the days of colonialism and people around the world in this age of fluid movement are consciously asserting their separate identities *on an intellectual level* for only the second time in recent history. (Black pride movement would be the first time.) So the answer is not clear.
I am sure Kathleen Taylor has many identities and she puts on one of them in the media. That’s fine. If that were her only identity, then she would appear to have been assimilated, and that would be fine, too. In either a melting pot or a tossed salad, there is a path to success, and everyone makes a unique decision about identity in enlightened self interest (i.e. a combination of path of least resistance and ideals), and collectively, along with little accidents in history, everyone defines the future of Asians and other people.
Racist people .. and I’m only in the seventh grade and I am also asian .. I found this site while looking up info on people I am considering doing a biography paper on. K-sly is one of them. I also think that all asians and people of all races should get along.
