The Fringe Benefits of Failure

Harvard Magazine has a transcript of J.K. Rowling’s commencement speech where she talks about benefits of failure and the importance of imagination. Her speech is elegant, humorous, very inspiring and a must read. Here are a few quotes from her speech:

“So why do I talk about the benefits of failure? Simply because failure meant a stripping away of the inessential. I stopped pretending to myself that I was anything other than what I was, and began to direct all my energy into finishing the only work that mattered to me. Had I really succeeded at anything else, I might never have found the determination to succeed in the one arena I believed I truly belonged. I was set free, because my greatest fear had already been realised, and I was still alive, and I still had a daughter whom I adored, and I had an old typewriter and a big idea. And so rock bottom became the solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life.”

“…You will never truly know yourself, or the strength of your relationships, until both have been tested by adversity. Such knowledge is a true gift, for all that it is painfully won, and it has been worth more to me than any qualification I ever earned.”

“Given a time machine or a Time Turner, I would tell my 21-year-old self that personal happiness lies in knowing that life is not a check-list of acquisition or achievement. Your qualifications, your CV, are not your life, though you will meet many people of my age and older who confuse the two. Life is difficult, and complicated, and beyond anyone’s total control, and the humility to know that will enable you to survive its vicissitudes.”

“One of the many things I learned at the end of that Classics corridor down which I ventured at the age of 18, in search of something I could not then define, was this, written by the Greek author Plutarch: What we achieve inwardly will change outer reality.”

The Qin Dynasty in Next “Mummy” Movie

This movie poster for “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” caught my eye over at Quicktime.com. I saw Jet Li’s name attached to it and I instantly knew that the movie probably had something to do with the Qin Dynasty and the Terra Cotta Warriors. What a coincidence since Heather and I just visited the Terra Cotta Warriors exhibit at the Bowers Museum last weekend. The trailer looks pretty cool but of course the movie takes liberties with the historical account of the Qin emperor. If it wasn’t for the Qin storyline and Jet Li I’d probably wait to see it on video, but now I might actually see it in the theater.

I might have to go watch “Hero” again since it’s another Jet Li movie that deals with the Qin Dynasty.

Sportin’ the new doo

I was sitting there in Studio DNA perusing through this month’s GQ magazine noticing all the stylish short haircuts and decided it’s time to try a new look. In the past this would have been a big deal and my agents would look at me with disapproval telling me that I would now need to go get new headshots. But now that I no longer have commercial representation and I’m concentrating on producing my own shows it doesn’t matter as much anymore.

Hmmm. It is about time to get some new headshots…

Cloverfield 5k Training Run

5k : 32.35min. I was able to shave 1min off my last run by sprinting for 10 seconds after walking. I’m still not able to run the entire 5k, but I’ve vastly improved since the Navy Seals Fitness Challenge where it took me almost 20min to cover 1.5 miles. I’m also trying to change my running style to become a fore-foot striker and incorporate Pose running techniques. So I’m running about a mile on my forefoot and the rest of the time mid-foot staying conscious of where my feet land (so that I don’t over-stride) and listening to the sound of my feet as they hit the ground so that my feet are light and I’m not creating unnecessary friction between me and the ground.

5k Training - 1st Run

5k : 33.37min. I just picked up the Nike+ iPod sensor to start timing my runs. Even though I’m wearing New Balance RC1001 I made it work by sticking the sensor under my front laces.

Getting Ripped With XFlowsion

At the beginning of the year H and I were lucky enough to be chosen to participate in a new yoga/fitness system created by Eric Paskel called XFlowsion. For 30 days we did intense yoga/dance/martial arts 4 times a week and ate according to the XFlowsion diet (whole grains, veggies, fruits, etc, etc). By the end of the program I lost 11lbs. A month after the program I dropped another 9lbs and ended up at 163lbs / 14.5% bodyfat. Well Christmas has come early this year because Eric has moved to LA from Michigan and has offered 3 weeks of free XFlowsion classes to those who participated in the original program. The XFlowsion commercial will be re-shot, AND Eric will be opening up his own gym sometime in Jan/Feb.

So H and I are back in XFlowsion boot-camp again. We started Friday. The schedule is Tues/Fri/Sat/Sun which means we just completed our 3rd XFlowsion class today. All I can say is that XFlowsion is one hell of a workout. H and I have been doing yoga at home and at various yoga centers, but nothing compares to Eric’s classes. By the end of each class I am absolutely exhausted. I never sweat as much in any other workout than XFlowsion. It takes a lot of concentration, strength, flexibility and endurance to get through his classes. It’s intense. But it’s as intense as you want it to be because Eric is so mellow. Each class is completely different too (other than the typical yoga down-dogs and chattarungas mixed in with everything). So now I’m starting off at my new weight of 163lbs/15% bodyfat and I’m hoping to get down to 10% bodyfat by Christmas. That means I need to lose 5% of my weight in bodyfat which would be 8lbs. To accomplish this I’m going to try to be even more precise with my nutrition. Using the Harris-Benedict principle, I can assess my basal metabolic rate — also known as BMR:

Men:
66 + (6.3 x weight in pounds) + (12.9 x height in inches) - (6.8 x age in years)

66 + (6.3 x 162) + (12.9 x 71) - (6.8 x 34) = 1771

I need to multiply this by 40% and add the total since I normally work out 3-4 times a week.

This means I need to eat 2,479 calories a day just to maintain my current body weight. So I need to create a caloric deficit be reducing calories. 1lb is roughly 3500 calories. So if I decrease my calories by 500/day I will lose 1lb a week. If I can also burn 500 calories a day I could lose 2lbs a week - which would put me 2lbs away from being 10% bodyfat in 3 weeks. The big challenge is that it is the holidays and H and I love food. That means on Thanksgiving we will not be following the diet. But luckily, Eric will have an XFlowsion class Friday morning to make up for our dietary “sins”.

Out of curiosity I asked Google how many calories Bikram yoga burns (it’s the closest I could think to XFlowsion). I know it it’s going to be different for everybody since it depends on your practice intensity and a lot of other factors, but from what I could find it sounds like it’s possible to burn 600-700 calories in an hour. So XFlowsion four times a week would be 2400 calories burned at the least. I will also be hitting the weights hard at the gym twice a week and have one day to rest and recover.

During this training period I also need to make sure I eat enough calories to keep my metabolism running high. That means I need to eat approx 400 calories a meal 5 times a day which would put me at 2000 calories which is roughly the 500 caloric deficit I need to burn fat.

So last time I lost 11lbs in 4 weeks doing XFlowsion 4x week and lifting on and off for that period of time while moderately following the XFlowsion diet. That means I should have no problem hitting 10% bodyfat in 3 weeks.

Acting is a Lifestyle More Than a Career

In the current LA Magazine I stumbled across an article that talked about acting being more of a lifestyle choice than a career. That article was like a cold dose of reality which I think all aspiring actors should read. It contains the cold hard facts: 95% of all actors require an alternate “day job” in order to survive and pay the bills. When they are not working, actors are spending their hard earned money on acting classes, headshots, agency/casting mailings, online casting services, union dues, demo reels, trade magazines, play books, and whatever other service they think will help promote themselves. And it’s not just money. It’s also the time spent on self promotion, finding an agent, or finding the next gig. Acting as a lifestyle is all about living on the hope that you could be lucky enough to become part of the 5% that make a living as a working actor. But the trap of the acting lifestyle is to put your life on hold waiting for that “big break” that may never come.

I chose the acting lifestyle in 1996 when I moved to LA. I was ready to sacrifice everything and put my life on hold for the chance to become a “famous” actor. Lucky for me I unintentionally fell into the dot-com industry where I’ve thrived ever since - and not even from trying. And I’ve still not given up my Hollywood dreams. It’s still a constant struggle to balance my life with my job and with the acting lifestyle. But somehow I manage.

What I find ironic is how similar the dot-com industry is to Hollywood. I feel like every time I land a new job/gig it’s like booking a film or TV show. Every dot-com company is filled with very interesting and unique characters, and there is plenty of twists, turns and drama in the storyline of every company. Over the years many companies never make it, which is like being part of a TV series that gets canceled. And the salary rollercoaster in dot-coms is similar to TV shows. It’s possible to make a lot of money in the dot-com industry, but you never know how long a gig will last. So it’s better not to buy that brand new BMW or Benz until your show is picked up for syndication or your companies goes public with an IPO.

XFlowsion DVD’s now available!

The XFlowsion DVD series is now available at xflowsion.com! What is XFlowsion? XFlowsion is an awesome mix of yoga, martial arts and dance taught by Eric Paskel. It’s perfect for people who have never done yoga before (like me). I personally lost 11lbs in 30 days by participating in a XFlowsion boot camp 4 times a week taught by Mr. XFlowsion himself - Eric Paskel. I’m now a yoga convert and have continued to take yoga classes (because there are no official XFlowsion classes in LA) and have lost an additional 10lbs. What’s unique about XFlowsion is the combination of isometric and plyometric moves along with the yoga stretching and aerobic moves which create an awesome way to stretch and strengthen core muscles while you get lean. Eric is also a great motivator and teacher with a straight-up no bullshit approach. I just hope that comes through in the DVD series. Much respect due.

Easy AJAX comments in MovableType using Mootools

The title says it all. Using the AJAX library from Mootools I was able to AJAXify the comment forms in Movable Type. Mootools makes it easy by supplying a Send() method in the Ajax class. It’s almost as simple as doing this:

<script>
$(’myForm’).send()
</script>

The only problem is that we need to perform some validation on the comment form before we submit it. Normally, this is handled by MT. But since we want to send the contents of the form using AJAX, we will need to move the validation code to javascript - like this:

var submit=true;

with (commentForm) {
if (author.value.length<2) {
alert('Please enter your name');
submit=false;
}
if (email.value.length<5) {
alert('Please enter your email');
submit=false;
}
if (text.value.length<5) {
alert('Please enter a comment');
submit=false;
}

Finally, after all form fields are validated I wanted to add some fancy AJAX visual transitions:

var response=$(commentForm.id).send();
var animFadeOut = new Fx.Style($(commentForm.id), "opacity", {
duration: 500,
onComplete: function() {
var e = $(commentForm.id);
e.setHTML('Thank you for your comment.');
var animFadeIn = new Fx.Style(e, "opacity", {
duration: 500
});
animFadeIn.start(0, 1);
}
});
animFadeOut.start(1, 0);

Then viola! I now have a fancy AJAX comment form. The only thing missing at the moment is getting the “Preview” button working using AJAX. I’ll work on that for next time…

Go ahead and try out my Ajax comment form!

UPDATE: I’ve converted this blog to Wordpress and it’s using the K2 theme which already includes AJAX effects.

XFlowsion Day 30

Goal: Leaner (accomplished)

Final weigh-in is 171lbs. That’s 11lbs less than when I started. Going through this challenge and participating in the XFlowsion program with Eric Paskel has really been incredible! In the last 30 days of doing XFlowsion 4 days a week and following a sensible diet, I’ve become a yoga convert. I’ve never really done yoga before this program but the combination of yoga poses with isometric and plyometric moves along with martial arts and dance is killer. It’s cardio and stretching and toning combined in one accessible program. Heather and I are totally inspired by this program and are determined to stay on the path of health and fitness through different yoga and movement classes along with weightlifting and eating healthy. Plus, I still could lose another 10lbs to be completely ripped!

The XFlowsion DVDs should be out very soon and I encourage everyone to check them out!
