Mobile Gaming - Tapwave

I stumbled upon an ad for this company called Tapwave which is advertising their mobile gaming/PDA/mp3/picture storage device. It looks pretty cool. A lot of companies are pushing these mobile gaming platforms. I personally don’t find them that interesting. Then again, maybe I’m just old.

I didn’t watch the Emmys

The Emmy Awards took place last night at the Shrine auditorium which happens to be less than 2 miles from our house. A friend of mine (and fellow actor) even worked as a valet at the event. The funny thing is, I didn’t even watch it on TV. I just don’t find it all that interesting. In fact, I don’t really find the Oscars that interesting either. Now don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the fact that people are being recognized for their hard work - and if I was ever nominated for any kind of acting award it would be one of the biggest and greatest nights of my life (second only to me getting married). But until then I just don’t see what all the hype is about. I’ll just read the highlights and summary at the Hollywood Reporter.

Class Improv #13: Critique

Today was another successful improv. Melissa did a good job in portraying ecstasy which made it hard for me to really pursue my objective of trying to win her back. I spent most of the improv trying to figure out why she was acting so strange and what exactly did she take. Tom said that in reality, that was all I could really do. It would seem strange if I tried to pour out my heart to someone who was that disconnected from reality.

On a different note, I started to really appreciate the talent and ability of one of the other actors in class. This guy reminds me of De Niro or Pacino because of his Italian looks, his New York accent and his emotional intensity. He has the ability to connect with real deep emotions. The anger and sadness he has demonstrated in class can be very intense at times which is very interesting to watch. I find myself wishing that I could dig up half the emotion intensity he is able to connect to. I guess it just takes practice…

Amphetamine Research

I’m doing amphetamine research for acting purposes. Don’t get it twisted.

For my next acting impediment I am planning on performing the next improv as if I was on “speed“. It might also be interesting to act out an amphetamine induced psychosis state. But for the most part I will be concentrating on the increased energy, the non-stop talking, the confidence and aggressiveness.

Basically I’m going to use the effects of this drug as an excuse to show off some of my old-school dancing skills.

I feel a groove coming on…

Don’t Leave Me
(a two person improvised scene)

Impediment: MDMA (Ecstasy) - performed by Melissa

Synopsis:
Melissa and I are in college and met through mutual friends. We started a whirlwind romance and I swooped her off her feet. After a month of dating, Melissa broke up with me. She never gave me a solid reason why. Two weeks have passed…

At the top of the scene Melissa will be on stage - high on ecstasy, doing some activity. What she doesn’t realize is that I am coming over to find out why she broke up with me and hopefully win her back.

Class Improv #12: Critique

Last night I ROCKED!!!

Tom said, “…That was a bold departure from anything I’ve seen you do in class. Your attention to details and how you played every moment was great! I really enjoyed your performance.” (paraphrased of course)

I was really able to let go and play in the scene. What really helped me is that I was not trying to cry or force any deep emotional pain. Instead I worked from anger and betrayal using a very familiar context - the dot-com industry. In the scene I was drunk and practicing what I was going to tell the other execs when I got to the restaraunt. The phrase “I’m the man up in this piece” (from Training Day) came into my head at the beginning of the improv and I played it up - trying to act like Denzel in my drunken state. The class loved it and their laughter fed my creativity and impulsiveness. The phrase became my mantra in the scene which added to the comedy. I felt very comfortable on stage because I was feeding off the positive feedback from the class. I didn’t feel like I had to rush anything. I was just having a good time. My partner Melissa was wonderful as well and greatly enhanced the scene with her really good comedic timing and her ability to play every moment. Every moment and action came naturally and worked beautifully.

If only every performance could be like that. And it should be.

Tell me about your locks…

Heather just called me a minute ago to tell me that a buff hispanic guy named “Koy” with tattoos and a rottweiler was walking down the sidewalk and stopped to talk to her. He kindly asked her about what kind of locks we have on the house, what kind of windows we have and if we had any dogs. She didn’t tell him of course, but the whole thing seems a little strange. He says he’s working on one of Bernie Mac’s house, or Bernie Mac’s producer house, which is in the neighborhood. It sounds like he was casing the security on our place.

Time to upgrade our security system and locks…

Crazy Night in Vegas
(a two person improvised scene)

Featured Impediment: Drunkeness - performed by me.

Synopsis:
Melissa and I have been dating for over a year and we recently started living together. I view her as my angel. Last weekend, I went with a bunch of my friends to Vegas for a bachelors party. We got a little crazy, drank a little too much and went to a strip club. In my drunken state I gave my business card (which had my home phone number) to one of the girls and told her to call me. Unfortunately, she called my house yesterday and said she was coming to LA to visit and wanted to know if I could show her around. Melissa heard the message on the answering machine and erased it without telling me.

I also happen to be the VP of Technology and co-founder of a dot-com start up which is about to go public. There has been a falling out of sorts between me and the other execs. The other execs are now trying to kick me out of the company and pay me off. The scene will start with me on stage drunk, practicing a maligning attack against the other execs.
