I’m sitting here watching “The Discovery Health Challenge” on the Discovery channel. It’s interesting and inspiring to see these people learn about eating right, exercising and losing weight. Now I feel guilty for eating pizza and cheesecake for dinner…
0 CommentsMonthly Archive for December, 2003
I went back to work today and noticed that traffic was pretty light and the office was pretty empty. Most people in LA are still on vacation in anticipation for New Years Eve. I can’t believe it’s going to be 2004. 2003 passed by so fast. I’m already starting to think about what my goals are for 2004, what I would like to accomplish and where I would like to be in life. Time seems to be flying by way too fast…
0 CommentsHeather and I had a very Merry Christmas! I hope you did too!
This year we traveled with our dog Lulu. This was the third time Lulu has flown with us to visit family. We like the fact that we can bring her but with all the current security precautions it can be a hassle. First off we had to get a health and acclimation certificate that states that our dog can withstand cold temperatures. We found out that the cargo of the plane is heated and pressurized where they store the animals but sometimes they can be exposed to the elements for a short period of time during boarding and unloading. Of course this is not a problem in LA, but in other states such as SLC where it is cold, this could be an issue. To make our dog more comfortable on her flight Heather bought a super deluxe kennel that is twice Lulu’s size and has wheels. Lulu also has a jacket and the kennel has a bed that fits on the bottom. Needless to say, Lulu is an LA dog which is spoiled. When we arrived in the airport we had to purchase a ticket for her travel then the TSA had to examine her cage before we put her in it. After Lulu was all situated the TSA then placed her on the cargo belt which carried her to the baggage area. It was pretty sad to see Lulu in her cage traveling down the cargo belt with her looking out the side of her kennel wondering what was happening to her. As we proceeded to our gate we could hear her barking. Heather was worried about Lulu but I assured her that the flight was only two hours and Lulu would be fine.
On our flight to SLC we happened to sit next to a very friendly, outgoing guy who turns out to be an ex-Division I football player who was injured, went to business school, was accepted into the MIT Business School program, became a Bose executive, created a business course and became a professor at the MIT business school (which is now mirrored at Harvard), created his own company and now manufactures MP3 players and components which are used by Sony and Rio. Despite all of his accomplishments he was very friendly and down to earth and should be nominated for fantasy dad of the year (he plays x-box with his son in his custom built home theater complete with a 50-inch projection screen and two mega-subwoofers installed under the hardwood floor which generate enough sound to shake the entire room). His other son also happens to be a snowboarder sponsored by K2. This guy was so interesting that we ended up talking the entire flight about life and technology. His company is: www.soulplayer.com.
We arrived in SLC and were greeted by the cold crisp air and snow covered grounds. My sister picked us up at the airport and drove us to my parents house. While in SLC we decided to catch up on our movies since ticket prices are cheaper. We went to the local movie megaplex and watched Lord of the Rings: Return of the King and The Last Samurai. We loved both of them. (Actually, my brother Jon couldn’t understand why the samurai had to fight in the first place, but I won’t go into that). We were also impressed with the movie complex. The complex is HUGE and incorporates many strip-mall style food and snack vendors. You can order a variety of food and bring it into the theater with you. We actually saw people carry in taco salads, chinese food, burgers and fries. The surprising thing is that the theater is also very clean!
On another night my sister took me, Heather, and my brothers downtown to see a Chihuly installation in one of the concert halls. It was a very cold night and we ended up walking a couple blocks to the concert hall only to discover the hall was closed, but we were able to see the glass sculpture through the glass. After taking a couple of pictures we walked back to the Gateway Plaza and went to a restaraunt where my sister’s boyfriend works. There we had a few drinks (which I insisted on being “real” instead of the typical watered-down Utah versions), a round of tequila shots and some food. Then we proceeded to the arcade section and we all played video games before heading back home. That was a fun night.
On Christmas day we awoke to a heavy snowfall which continued through the evening. The sky dumped at least a foot of snow at the base of the mountain. I really wanted to go snowboarding but our plans didn’t work out so I ended up strapping on my board and going to the back yard trying to take advantage of the beautiful deep powder. The snow was actually so deep and fluffy I kept getting stuck because my board would just sink into the snow. My brothers and I ended up throwing snowballs at each other and my dad even joined us as well. Heather and Lulu stayed inside and kept warm smiling at us through the window.
The snow was beautiful but was a big concern for Lulu. Since Lulu is an LA dog she isn’t used to the snow. That meant that getting her to use the bathroom outside was huge deal because the grass was buried under snow. We actually had to dig a path for Lulu in the grass so she could “do her thing”. It was funny and frustrating at the same time.
The rest of our nights were spent playing ping pong with my family, playing Cranium with my family, playing Soul Caliber II with my brothers, playing chess with Heather and playing Hong Kong style Mahjong with my parents and brothers and sister (my brother Chris taught Heather how to play and Heather ended up winning most of the games - needless to say, she loves the game now.) We all had a very merry Christmas!

You will not believe this but today, ANOTHER homeless person approached us asking for money!!!
Actually, it was Heather who was approached by this guy while she was out in the yard. She called me and told me that this guy was dressed decently and started asking her about our house and if we needed someone to work on it. Then he told her that he was homeless - kicked out of his house because a divorce. He also said he’s just trying to eat. Heather told him that she didn’t have any money but to come back two hours later ’cause I would be home.
When Heather told me this I was pretty mad. Not because of her, but because I feel like we’ve become the local ATM in the ‘hood.
“Oh look. It’s a white girl and an Asian guy. They will give us some money for sure.”
WHAT THE HELL!?!?!?
When did we become the house for handouts - it’s like we’re giving out Halloween treats for homeless people 365 days a year. I’m tired of it. Heather suggested that we purchase McDonald gift certificates to give to homeless people who say they need money for food. I thought that was a pretty good idea but I still don’t want our house to be the place for handouts.
When I arrived home I got this idea that if this guy showed up again we would take his picture and post it on the Internet just in-case this guy decided to rob us. Well the guy came back. I needed to show that I wasn’t messing around. The guy came and knocked on our door. I put on my deepest voice and menacing looked and opened the door.
Me: “Can I help you.”
I cautiously walked out the door and looked this guy in the face. He looked friendly and was dressed in decent clothes. He definitely didn’t look homeless. As I talked to him I sized him up and asked him questions like “where’s your family” and “you are wearing some pretty nice clothes to be homeless”. The guy spun a sad tale of a foster childhood and being laid-off from his construction job and recently getting kicked out of his house because of a divorce. He said he wasn’t looking to bother anyone or cause trouble but just wanted to work to get back on his feet again. He acted very humble and very polite. I got the feeling that he might be telling the truth, so I decided to help him out. I told him that we have no work for him and that I am tired of people asking us for money. But I also told him that if he wasn’t lying that I feel for him and wanted to help him out so I gave him some money.
I’m not sure if I handled the situation correctly but my gut instinct says he was a decent guy down on his luck. Either that or he is a very good con man and is waiting to strike.
So I came up with a brilliant idea. Next time some person comes to my house begging for money I will pull a flaming dollar bill from my wallet with a menacing look on my face that says, “Don’t F*CK w/ me. I’m wierd, crazy and dangerous.”
Nothing like a little impromptu magic to scare the hell outta someone.
0 CommentsTonight I was getting some stuff out of my car and moving it in the house when I noticed someone walking down the sidewalk. It was dark so I couldn’t really see who this person was.
Strange Person: “Excuse me, are you Korean?”
Me: “No I’m Chinese.”
Strange Person: “Could I talk to you for a second?”
As the person approached the gate the light from the house revealed their face. Across the gate from me was this African-American guy who was dressed in a tight spandex short sleeve half-top with tight spandex pants. He was about 5′10 with a medium build but had a feminine tone in his voice.
Strange Person: “I’m sorry to bother you but I’m gay and I was hanging out with my boyfriend tonight and we got drunk. My boyfriend lives down the street and right now he is smoking up a storm and took some stuff from my bag. I’m trying to get home and I live in Hermosa beach so I called the cops who said that I was not in their jurisdiction and I wanted to take the bus but I only have a dollar. If you could possibly give me a ride or help me with the bus fare, I’m just trying to get outta here and the brothers in this neighborhood have made it clear that they don’t like me in their hood.”
Me: “Well I can’t give you a ride, but hold on a second and let me take this stuff inside.”
I took the bags I had inside the house and Heather was standing right inside the door.
Heather: “Don’t give anyone a ride”
Me: “I wasn’t going to. I figure I’d just give him some money to take the bus home.”
Heather: “I was worried that this guy was trying to distract you while someone else tried to get inside the house, or I thought maybe he was going to try to rob you so I was standing here listening ready to hit the alarm button or run out there and try to help you.”
Me: “Yeah this guy is a little wierd but he seems to be telling the truth so I’m just going to give him some money.”
Heather and I grabbed a couple of dollars from our wallets and I headed outside to give it to the guy.
Strange person: “Thank you very much. Why don’t you write down your address so I can pay you back?”
Me: “Don’t worry about it”
Strange person: (emphatically) “Thank you very much. You’re so kind. Merry Christmas to you.”
1 CommentToday was Heather’s birthday and since Heather wasn’t feeling that well, I brought home pasta from our favorite Italian restaraunt Farfalla (now called Amalfi’s). After we ate I showered her with presents and then we put together little Christmas gifts for our neighbors. The rest of the night we just watched TV (Dream House, VH1, Behind the Music).
Happy Birthday to my beautiful wife!
0 CommentsA lot of people were sick tonight in class. I don’t know if that is what it was, but the whole class seemed a little off. Tom also didn’t have as much patience as he usually does and it was obvious that he was frustrated with the performances tonight. But in the end, one person shined through. Kristina, who drives two hours down from San Diego twice a week and is also sick, delivered a beautiful performance even though she worked with an alternate partner - since her regular scene partner was sick. Her performance was grounded, realistic, emotional, human and beautiful. Tom was very pleased and made her an example of the night as to what level of performance and committment we should be striving for.
0 CommentsNullsoft has quietly released Winamp 5 to challenge iTunes. I just installed it and I think it’s awesome!
0 CommentsI’ve pretty much been drugged up on Sudafed while drinking green tea like water and popping vitamins. I do feel like I’m recovering though. I felt well enough to do a couple sets of push-ups and some jumping jacks. At least I’ll be fully recovered for Christmas vacation (I hope)…
