Unleash Your Creativity

Scientific American has an incredible article based on a discussion with three experts on creativity. Here are some quotes from the article which resounded with me:

“There’s so much power in a new idea taking shape and changing the way people live and act. Often the rest of us are in awe, or we are even afraid of a new idea, and sometimes our fears spur us to learn more about it.”

“There are four different skill sets, or competencies, that I’ve found are essential for creative expression. The first and most important competency is “capturing”-preserving new ideas as they occur to you and doing so without judging them. ”

“The second competency is called “challenging”-giving ourselves tough problems to solve. In tough situations, multiple behaviors compete with one another, and their interconnections create new behaviors and ideas. The third area is “broadening.” The more diverse your knowledge, the more interesting the interconnections-so you can boost your creativity simply by learning interesting new things. And the last competency is “surrounding,” which has to do with how you manage your physical and social environments. The more interesting and diverse the things and the people around you, the more interesting your own ideas become.”

“You have to put up with dry spells and keep creating in the face of them.”

“You have to learn not to fear failure and even to rejoice in it. ”

“The creative individual thinks of failure as a new opportunity.”

“…failure actually stimulates creativity directly. It really is valuable.”

“I think that creativity is contagious and that the best thing we can do for children is to model for them what it’s like to be a creative individual.”

Next goal: Stronger and Ripped in 30 Days

Is it possible to gain 10lbs of muscle in 30 days and go from 14% bodyfat down to 10%? I’m about to find out.

A couple of years ago I trained with a 6 foot tall half Korean, half African-American trainer who had the physique of a bodybuilder. Over two months I gained 10lbs of muscle and went from benching 185lbs to 225lbs. That was a couple of years ago and since then I’ve lost a lot of that strength especially after dropping 20lbs. I really enjoyed my training sessions with him even though it was hard to understand him half the time through his thick Korean accent. I’d love to train with him again but unfortunately his location is inconvenient for me. So now I’m on the hunt for a new trainer.

A few days ago I met with a few people at Velocity Fitness which happens to be a small gym located in the office building where I work. The focus of Velocity Fitness is functional training/sports performance. Every trainer that works there comes from either a coaching background or competitive sports background. Supposedly this small gym trains pro-athletes and celebrities as well as the common folk. The gym is small, but very nice - and expensive. $600 for 4 training sessions plus $50/mo membership fee. These are the kind of trainers that could definitely help me reach my goals, but I’m not quite ready to invest pro-athlete kind of money.

A few days later while I was working out at 24-Hour Fitness I noticed the “Shape Up for $99” promo flyers around the gym. The promo is for 4/20min training sessions which is a decent deal. The only negative is that most trainers at 24-Hour Fitness don’t seem to have the experience or knowledge I’m looking for. Plus, it seems kinda hypocritical for some young guy/girl who is only in mediocre shape to try to tell me how to get in shape . I want to be trained by someone who has been successful in transforming their own physique. That being said, I think I might still sign-up for the $99 deal as long as I can find a trainer who knows what they’re doing and is not going to try to sell me crappy Apex supplements or treat me like a fitness newbie.

Challenge: Leaner and Stronger in 30 days

Is it possible to transform your body in 30 days?

From all the articles I’ve read over the years in Mens Health and Muscle and Fitness, I know it’s possible. The real question is if it’s possible for me to transform my body in 30 days. That’s my challenge. I’ve been trying for years to achieve my fitness goals and have gone through personal trainers, circuit training, weight training, hip-hop aerobics, abs classes, low carb diets and thousands of dollars worth of sports nutrition supplements to get closer too, but never achieve my goals. The only two things that really seemed to help was the low carb diet - which took me from a chubby 185lbs 25%bodyfat 37in waist to a non-ripped 165lbs 15%bodyfat 31in waist, and my last personal trainer - a half Korean, half African American chiseled body builder with a heavy Korean accent and gentle demeanor. At the end of my training program with him I put on 10lbs of muscle and was benching 225lbs. Right now I’m 182lbs 20%bodyfat 33in waist. Ultimately my goal is to be 185lbs 10%bodyfat. But for the next 30 days I’m going to concentrate on losing 8lbs of bodyfat and mainting muscle mass. I know this is completely possible losing 2lbs a week by staying on a strict diet, increasing cardio and changing my weight lifiting plan to moderate weight and high reps. After years of reading fitness articles, I know getting lean and ripped is all about a strict diet. So for my diet I will be following the guidelines of the Abs Diet, but will increase my vegetable proportions, decrease my carb intake slightly and increase my protein intake so that I will be eating 2000 calories daily maintaining my current muscle mass by ingesting 182g of protein a day and supplementing with BCAA’s, L-Glutamine, and pre-alkalyne creatine (to increase strength but prevent water retention). To increase my cardio I will be joining a new yoga/martial arts class. I’ve studied martial arts for a few years when I was younger, but never have really done yoga. This fusion of yoga/martial arts promises to stretch and strengthen core muscles plus provide an intense cardio workout. I will be taking this class every other day/4 days a week. In-between those cardio classes I will be lifting weights on tuesday and thursday taking saturday off for rest and recovery. I know that if I can stick to this plan and schedule I can definitely transform my body.

Today was the first day of my personal fitness challenge, and also the first day of my new yoga/martial arts fusion class. I really enjoyed the energy of the class and how the instructor was able to ease us into different yoga positions. The workout was killer I don’t think I’ve ever sweat that much in any cardio class. I really liked how plyometric moves were incorporated into the yoga positions and kept my heart rate going. Sticking with this class will be key in helping me achieving my fitness goals.

Altered States

I can barely think straight. The only reason why I’m able to still walk and talk is my massive consumption of caffeine in the form of coffee, tea and various energy drinks. Since my last entry I’ve worked non-stop on freelance projects and slept 4-5 hours each night. It’s my own fault really. I didn’t have to take on all the projects I have, but these freelance projects pay off our debt and keep me in acting class. I just wish it was as easy to get acting jobs as it is for me to get freelance work. If it was, I’d be working more than Ryan Seacrest and his multiple TV and radio shows.

Things have been pretty good lately - other than feeling like I’m going to pass out from exhaustion. Last Sunday I brought back my Vin Diesel/Boiler Room monologue to class and rocked it. I felt a great connection with the monologue, the room and my audience. Lisa’s first remark in her critique was “That was a great performance for another teacher.” She went on to explain that although my performance would have been viewed by many other actor coaches as solid and “great”, she wanted me to connect even deeper to the emotions. She wanted me to completely manifest the quiet confidence of power and assuredness. The confidence of power players. But overall, she really liked my performance and said that this was a really good piece for me.

I also auditioned for a USC and a UCLA student film this week. Basically I view these student projects as a possibility to connect with the future power players in Hollywood. You never know who might be the next Spielberg, Tarantino, Rodriguez, etc. You also never know what student project might end up being the next Napolean Dynamite.

Yesterday I had a McDonald’s audition as a politician’s aide. I was pretty exhausted going in and I hope I summoned up enough energy for the filming.

I also received a mass email yesterday from a friend who booked ANOTHER guest starring role on a prime-time show. It’s hard not to be envious especially when I’m the same “type” as he is and I didn’t even get called in for an audition.

On another note, I really feel for Gina on the show America’s Next Top Model (let me explain - I’m married and my wife controls the Tivo). Gina had a horrible interview with Tyra and the judges in the first show when she started off strong about being Asian but then went on to say she’s confused with her identity. This effects her confidence. I understand exactly how she feels. Unfortunately I don’t think she will make it very far in the competition unless she is able to resolve her issues really quickly. Instead I think this will end up being a great learning experience for her. She should be proud that she has even made it this far. I don’t think Asians have been represented at all on that show.

BTW, I’m looking through the breakdowns on various online casting sites and it’s really annoying to see roles labeled as: ALL AMERICAN GUY/Caucasian. I’ve NEVER seen ALL AMERICAN GUY/All Ethnicities. Why is that? Can I not be an ALL AMERICAN GUY since I’m Asian?

eBay Press Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Actor Auctions Himself on eBay — Winning Bid will be Donated to “World Vision”

Los Angeles, CA; January 30, 2006 — So far, eBay has seen its share of unusual auctions. Past items for sale have included “Virgin Mary in Grilled Cheese” (sold for $28,000) and Pope Benedict XVI’s former Volkswagen (sold for nearly a quarter million dollars U.S.). Both items were purchased by GoldenPalace.com, an online casino.

But if you think you’ve seen it all on eBay, you haven’t yet.

Actor David Chiu is putting himself up for auction on eBay to work on any legitimate show or production, and 100% of the auction proceeds will be donated to World Vision (www.worldvision.org). The winning bidder will have Chiu’s acting services for up to two weeks to complete its project.

“It’s a situation where I feel everyone wins,” says Chiu about his decision to auction himself. “The studio gets an actor by donating to something worthwhile. World Vision will receive much needed funds. And of course I’ll hope to show the studio the kind of talent I can offer long-term.”

A member of the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television & Radio Artists, Chiu has been acting for 10 years, appearing in numerous independent films and commercials and having a couple of smaller parts on General Hospital.

Clips from Chiu’s past work can be found on his blog at http://www.davidchiu.net, and his auction can be found at eBay
(www.ebay.com) by searching for “David Chiu”.

Malcolm David in the Middle

I can’t believe it. I actually have a theatrical audition! My agency is sending me in for a guest-starring spot on “Malcolm in the Middle”. And get this - I’m suppose to be playing a “17-25 year old muscular American-Chinese” guy who is Jessica’s boyfriend. It was just recently at the VC Film Festival workshop when I was asking the VP of Casting for FOX “when will we see an Asian guy with the blonde engenue?”

Maybe they actually heard me?

VC Film Fest

On Thurs and Saturday I went to check out events at the VC Film Fest. Thursday night I attended the opening event at the DGA and saw the premiere of Saving Face written by first-time director/writer (and ex dot-com worker) Alice Wu. The film was intersting and had it’s moments but ultimately left me un-impressed. At the end of the movie all I could think is if it is more “shocking” to see two asian females in a passionate lesbian relationship, or an Asian guy with a sexy blonde starlet in a passionate relationship.

I also felt strangely out of place among my fellow Asian brothers and sisters sitting in that theater. Unlike the characters portrayed in the movie, I am not bilingual. My parents, since they are from different Asian countries, spoke only english in the house (except when they spoke to relatives). We didn’t have a lot of relatives close by or even come visit us very often. My experience was different than what I saw on screen and a lot of the jokes that people laughed at, I just didn’t find that funny.

On Saturday I attended a seminar on “Castng Asian Americans”. Most of the information seemed geared more towards Asian actors getting started in the industry. I was more interested in asking some of the deeper issues such as, “How do we (as asians) change the game and get those leading male roles?” and “When are we going to see an Asian guy kissing the hot blonde girl on network TV?”

The answer from the panel came from the main sponsor of the event AZN TV. Her respone was that Asians need to support Asian media such as the VC Film Festival and AZN TV. With support the demand for Asian programming will grow and Asians will gain better visibility across all media.

Although I agree with the basis of this statement, I do see a couple problems. One of the biggest problems is that I just don’t see a unified support from all Asian communities. The problem is that we, as Asians come from several different countries who speak different languages and inherently have negative views of each other because of things that have happened in history. We are not unified. And frankly, there are a lot of Asians who are just out there for themselves. Plus, there are a lot of different demographics of Asians - from those who have immigrated, to those who are second generation, to those who are bilingual, to those who are completely “assimilated”. How do you appeal to all groups?

Ultimately I think it is about the quality of the work. If the story is entertaining and has a universal theme, people will like it and appreciate it regardless of race. Look at movies such as “Bend it Like Beckham” and “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”. Both highly successful and entertaining interweaving cultural elements from different peoples’ background. This is the kind of product we need.

Actor/Writer/Filmmaker

H and I were talking the other day about the short film projects I’m developing. She pointed out how interesting it was that ever since I started making a strong commitment to “make something happen”, people have rallied arond me. It’s as if my creative energies are being validated telling me that this is the way to go. A lot of opportunities have opened up recently and things are moving in the right direction. Over the past week I have developed and written a short film which will shortly be in pre-production. I’m excited about my script because I have been watching a lot of short films recently on iFilm and other places and most of the films aren’t all that great. Even the ones which have won multiple awards. My film actually conveys a serious message that I hope will get people thinking. So far, response to my script has been great but I’m still in the process of doing some small revisions and tightening up the story.

I also happened to meet with a producer friend of mine whom I first met when I was a host on the short lived tv show “IZ”. We had a great meeting over lunch last week and now we are working on a short film based on a great monologue he wrote.

So there it is. I now have two short films in pre-production and I’m still developing a couple more scripts. I’m hoping to have at least one of my projects in the film festival circuit this year. Hopefully these projects will give my acting career a good jump start.

On the pure acting front I have an audition for the CBS Showcase. It’s a yearly thing that all the studios do. It’s actually a little like American Idol, except for the fact that you have to be “invited” to be seen by the “judges”. For the audition I have to perform a 1 minute monologue. I’m thinking I will do the Edmund Pollard monologue

This is the same network that produced the “reality” show “Love is in the Heir”. It looks like they are jumping on the reality TV band wagon hard. You gotta realize that their first priority is making a good dramatic TV show so I don.t know if a serious actor would benefit from being on a reality show about trying to be an actor. Then again, I see a lot of reality show “personalities” who are getting more opportunities than me.

…maybe I should apply…

Seriously though, it would be interesting to see what kind of contract they make the actor sign when they win. And who is this “Top Hollywood Agent” anyway? Would you be taken seriously as an actor if you won, or would you just be considered a contest winner on a reality TV show ready for your 15min of fame?

I’ll probably end up watching this dumb show out of curiosity.

BTW, another reality show that makes me want to vomit . “The Starlet”. You call that acting?

BUT… Project Greenlight this season is awesome. A lot of drama and intersting characters and reality in the truth of movie making. Also, the fact that the fate of the show rests in the hands of the film, makes it riveting.

I actually had this idea to pitch a reality TV show based on my life as a struggling actor. Here’s the pitch:

“Follow a struggling asian-american actor as he pursues his dream of becoming a leading man in Hollywood. See him train daily in the gym to look like an a-list actor, watch him battle nervousness and sweating at auditions, hear him talk about issues about being Asian in Hollywood and laugh with him as he works out his issues on stage at the comedy clubs.”

Now if I can just get a network to buy it. Hello “E! Entertainment”. I have an idea for you…

New Bio…

David has been in the performing arts as long as he can remember. as a small child he studied piano for many years, participating in numerous recitals and competitions. At the age of 10, he composed his first song entitled, “Mommy”. By the time he reached middle school he became bored with the piano and decided to learn the violin. David showed natural ability and accelerated through the Suzuki method playing in orchestras, string quartets, duets, solos and competitions all the way through high-school.

At the end of his high-school career, David set out to break through Asian stereotypes. He was tired of being the quiet, shy, Asian student in class. So at the 1991 high-school talent show, David created a MC Hammer/Janet Jackson inspired self-choreographed dance routine. Within the first few dance steps he shocked the audience and won over the crowd of over 500 people who started chanting his name.

In 1997 David moved out to Los Angeles to pursue acting and has had small roles on shows such as General Hospital and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. David also has served as a host for a short lived late-night TV show called IZ and has acted in numerous independent and student films. David is no stranger to the stand-up comedy scene and has performed in comedy clubs across LA and participated in the Asian Pacific American Stand-Up Comedy Festival. David continues to break through stereotypes by participating in shows such as Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Asian Men and is currently doing triple duty as writer/director/actor on independent film projects such as the Krispy Kreme Konspiracy and the Smooth Butter Love project. David is a graduate of the two-year method acting program at the Joanne Baron/DW Brown acting studio.
