Today I was introduced to the Evisu brand at a hip-hop clothing store on Melrose Ave. I had first heard about the brand from the controversial Details magazine article and was curious to see what it was all about. I picked up a pair and looked at the price tag - $365. Ouch! Who would pay $365 for a pair of jeans? Celebrities? Definitely not me. Not even if I had a lot of money to spend. The salesperson then showed me a couple graphic t-shirts by Evisu as well. I looked at the price tag - $140. Would you really pay $140 for a t-shirt?

I’m an American living in Japan. I don’t know why the hip hop community got into the Evisu jeans. They’re intended for ravers, smaller framed Japanese teens and those of us who missed the good old days when Levi’s made real jeans! Levi’s sold out and produce cheap sweatshop copies mass produced in countries where you can’t walk around at night. Ebay sells fake Evisu jeans. That’s why they never show photos of the selvedge lines at the bottom of the jeans’ cuffs. If you can’t afford EVISU’s then consider Von Dutch jeans. They’re AMERICAN MADE! All that other garbage- Sean John jeans, Ecko, Enyce and Rocawear- start out as no tag generics mass produced in CHINA. Once those labels are placed on them, suddenly they become high end and stylish! Going back to Evisu, the Japanese exported the 1950’s machines they originally bought from Levi’s in the USA to Hong Kong. Japan is a high tech country. Like all high tech countries, the key is to exploit cheap labor. Just because Evisu’s are made in China does not mean they fall into the same category as the other garbage denim out there…I hope they always remain expensive. I would hate to see them worn down to the ankles by some drunk and jobless low life hanging outside a bodega.

The ‘M’ appearing on the back pockets on the Evisu jeans is rarely painted to resemble the actual letter M. The ‘M’ as u you call it is supposed to slope. The left hand slope is higher than the one onthe right. They’re assymetrical. The ‘M’ is painted/sewn within the borders of the rear pockets. They also stop right before the 2 seams right at the end of the pockets. They don’t spill over onto the rest of the jeans. The ones you see on ebay either are a perfect M or stop short of covering the spans of the rear pockets. The M’s you see on the ‘EVISU’ jeans found on Ebay are depicted in weird colors–colors Evisu never used on their jeans.

Evisu have been at the forefront of jeans long before rap stars started rockin them. You can get some real bargains on ebay but you have to know the characteristics of genuine evisu. The Japanese ones are made from indigo denim and marked with a selvedge stiching on each od the outside leg. This should be visible when the jeans are turned up at the bottom. Most fakes won’t have this. Also the japanese ones have a black ink stamp on the back of the inside with a product code. They also usually only use orange and yelllow thread and a chainstich pattern should be visible on the inside. In the UK a real pair goes for abouut

all you guys are retarded. evisu jeans are never cheap. the cheapest i have seen them, brand new, is $160 for the evisu/puma collab. but the regular evisu line NEVER gets as low as 70, 80 whatever you guys said. they are now everywhere. even in the mall close to me. they go for regular price.. about $240 and up. depending on the style. all the other ones cheap ARE FAKE. the difference in cost is lets assume that a manufacturer makes levis for 5 dollars he would make rocawear for 9 odd dollars because of all the over costing of patches , embroideries , prints etc …whats happens is that when they are making these fancy jeans with all prints / embroideries etc the cost of production becomes more expensive due to the wastage i.e misprinting / damaged printing etc so its the increase in rejection cost + added cost of patches/prints embelems etc + if a factory makes 5000 pieces of basic levis jeans they will end up making 3500 pieces of this as its more fancy and consumes more time

the difference from the costs perspective is not very big the manufacturing cost would be below 13-14 dollars but they use better yarn count as the jeans made in italy usually have a better fabric quality because its to do with the cotton itself from which the jeans is made and is naturally better in italy as compared to other asian countries plus they use better and more expensive chemicals to ensure that the jeans lasts longer than the normal jeans again if it is still being made for 10-12 dollars why is it being retailed for 150 dollars because obviously versace is targetting a group of ppl in the society which will buy it so sells limited qty and has to work on maximum margin to cover his expenese what about the advestisement costs on cruises and banners

evisu jeans again the cost will not be beyond 13-15 dollars max but the quantities sold by him would be even smaller than that of versace and diesel so his profit percentage has to be 10 times to cover his expenses as he is targetting a certain class of ppl and is selling very small qty unlike others
when this jeans is being made they follow very strict guidelines and undoubtebly the fabric , dyeing n stuff is superior to others and is being produced at good factories who have good quality standards my point is difference from the cost perspective is nominal but the profit and qty is what varies but again you guys are only buying it to show off that you are buying something expensive and stylish .. and i wouldnt blame you thats how things work..
now as to why some jeans that you buy are 300 dollars and some 60 dollars ..see when you buy it from a retailer he works on a 120-150% so that means that if he was buying it for a 100-120 odd he would be retailing it for 300 so if u are buying from a wholesaller you can buy it for a 100 odd dollars and sometimes ppl buy it from sale too ..if they dont have enough sizes / colors or the style is out of demand they just try to get rid of it and you can buy it cheap..yes you can also buy it for 20 dollars its not impossible why ?
the manufacturer makes visu for 14 he sells it to visu for 18 …than visu sells it to wholesallers for 80-90 than wholesallers sell it to retail for 11-130 …..but what happens is that when the goods are being inspected by visus quality controllers in the factories (china or where ever they are being produced) they reject a certain percentage on quality ground as their standards are very high so lets assume that the factory made 3000 pieces and 500 pieces got rejected so only 2500 were shipped ? more often than not even the rejected piecs are very good quality abd the defect is only technical and if you being a customer would see it ..you would say its excellent quality ..but there is a technical defects and common ppl can not detect it
the length of the jeans might be half a cm bigger than proposed etc very small things ..so now the factory with those 500 pieces will not keep them in the factory …they will sell it in the local market …hence when they will sell it they will make a loss and they will sell it for 6-5 dollars as in china ppl are poor and they cant afford such expensive prices …so what happens than is some of the re exporters buy that jeans and sell them to some importers who buy these first quality stocks …so now if in the open market it was sold for 5 dollars a piece and the re exporter who bought it from the factory sold nit for 6 to the importer ..the importer will release it in the us and it will be 8 odd dollars so he will re sell them to smaller stores for 12-13 and than it depends it could be retailed from 30-50 dollars what ever
the importer now can not sell it to big stores why ? because the brand is a copy right of viso and he is not legally allowed to import it due to copy right issues but these ppl have good connections in customs as this is their business and they release it and without the papers they can only sell it to smaller stores hence you buy it way cheper ..
one good example marshalls and tj max do the same thing thats why brands are cheper over there but they have bought a license from these big designers by paying millions of dollars to share the copy rights of realeasing it and selling it as second to “a” quality …

There are two possible reasons why they’re priced so high 1) They were genuine evisu, and if so at that price I’d assume them to be the No.1 denim. In that case, you’re paying for quality and a well constructed pair of jeans. Think of it like watches, we can compare the evisu to rolex and the brands of jeans you’re used to (diesel, true religion, etc.) to designer watches. They both look like watches, but the rolex has a mechanical movement, and the designer watch has an electronic movement. Why is the rolex worth more? Constructions and the materials used. OR reason 2) they were fake rip offs of evisu which at most times look terrible with their over the top designs and mediocre craftsmanship. No selvage, and in many cases low grade denim. These are priced high pretty much to make money. Riding the celebrity endorsements and bleeding the ignorant sheep who follow. If it enables them to stay in business and continue making high quality pieces then I say go for it.
So, if you don’t want to pay that much for jeans then don’t. keep wearing your true religion or whatever. by the way bro, nice haircut haha
