Miller Lite Audition

I FINALLY have an audition. It’s a commercial audition for Miller Lite featuring a beach scene. I was told to wear shorts and the casting director will be requesting the guys to be shirtless. Hmmm… not quite sure I’m ripped enough to be showing off my body, but oh well…

LA Radio is so Ghetto

First there were the advertisements for a free pager (for your baby’s momma) when you get a bail bond. Now there is the instant booty call using the walkie-talkie function on Boost mobile phone (that’s really how it was advertised!)

On another very wierd note:

Porn, Mangled Severed Heads and a Rogue Mormon

And yes. This is an unfortunately true story.

My life as an actor

My dog ate my negatives - a true story.

I recently spent around $300 on a commercial headshot photo session and 4×5 proofs at the photo lab to get new pictures for my commercial agent. Then Heather and I made the mistake of leaving the packet - complete with proofs and SIX roles of negatives - on our couch in the den where our puppy Simon has learned he can jump up onto. When we arrived home the other day I walked into the den to the horrific site of my negatives strewn across the floor with my 4×5 proofs all chewed up and torn to shreds. I was understandably FURIOUS BEYOND BELIEF! I wanted to kill that little dog. But I didn’t. Instead we went to the gym and I worked out my frustration with free weights.

$300 down the drain.

Well maybe not. Not all the negatives have been chewed. Just 4 strips - approx 20 pictures and I think there are only two pictures in this set that my agents wanted to see. I’m going to take the neagtives back to the lab to see if they can salvage those two pictures.

On a more positive note…

Last Wednsday I was called to reprise my role in the romantic scene from the play “The Voice of the Turtle” for a 1st year/Vital Acting class at the studio. I was actually a little nervous at first because it has been a year since I’ve worked on that scene and I don’t remember the lines anymore. Luckily, Elaine (the acting teacher for the class and my 1st year teacher) allowed me to use the script. I took a deep breath and reminded myself what first year training is all about - listen, be affected and respond. So that is what I did.

When the scene was over I wasn’t that pleased with my performance. I actually stood up to leave but Elaine came over to give me a hug and told me to sit down so she could critique our performace. Elaine started with me and said that this was the most relaxed and connected performance she has ever seen from me. I was surprised and very pleased. I was glad that I was able to show what two years of training at the studio can do.

Now if I can just bring this level of performance to my auditions…

Soul Plane Bootlegged in the ‘hood

I was just reading this article over at Variety saying that MGM is blaming bootleggers for the poor performance of “Soul Plane” at the boxoffice. It’s funny because I was just talking to Chemin Martinez the other day at the acting studio and he said the same thing. He said that there were a lot of people who had told him they saw the bootleg movie months before it opened “nationwide” (in like 3 theaters in LA) and liked it. He did admit the movie wasn’t really that good, but hey, he did get exposure on the big screen.

My new laptop

I’ve been a tech-head all day today ’cause I received my new fancy Acer Aspire 2012wlmi laptop. I am very pleased with it so far. Right now I am sitting in my den writing this entry on my laptop over a wireless connection. Very cool!

The man vs The geek vs The actor

Last night Heather and I went to Houstons (Santa Monica) for dinner. Houstons is one of our most favorite restaraunts in LA. The prime rib with horseradish on the side and a baked potato is just incredible. Finishing the meal with a warm apple cobbler is perfect. Anyway, we just so happened to be seated in front of the bar where people were watching the Laker’s game. Neither Heather and I are big sports fans, but I happened to catch the three-pointer that Kobe shot with 56 seconds left in the game tying up the score. What an incredible shot! The place went wild and Heather and I were caught up in the excitement. We ended up watching the rest of the game and talked about maybe checking out a Laker’s game next year at the Staples center since it’s right in our ‘hood.

After we arrived home and cleaned up after our dogs, we quickly changed and headed over to the gym. Heather worked out with her trainer and I spent 35 minutes doing cardio and then did a couple of sets of incline bench presses and regular bench presses. A couple times I thought I might actually pass-out from exhaustion. Heather’s trainer actually suggested that I need to take a lot more vitamins because my work out routines are pretty intense. He suggested Universal’s AnimalPak. He said that I would feel a difference after taking them. I guess I’ll have to pick some up to try it out.

I tried to check my email last night and write an entry in this blog. I discovered that my computer would not boot. I hit the “on” switch and the fans turn on, the DVD drive spins - then nothing. So today I ordered an Acer 2012 laptop. I’ve been researching the best laptops that are “desktop replacements” that cost less than $3000. My search ended with the eMachines 6809 and the Acer 2012. I really wanted to get the eMachines laptop because I could pick it up at my local BestBuy and return it if I had a problem. Also, I found a lot of online reviews from people who said it was the best “bang for the buck”. Then I read about the Acer 2012 which has slightly better specs at the same price - so I went ahead and bought the Acer online.

I always hate when people ask “how’s the acting going”? I never really know what to say. “I’m between gigs”, “It’s slow right now”, “I’m currently finishing up a 2-year acting program”? Well the reality is that I am finishing up my 2-year acting program and am very, very busy with rehearsals and classes. Other than that, I have new commercial headshots that are getting developed into 4×5 proofs for both my agencies. I’m also trying to get myself to submit to current productions in BackStage West and Ross Reports. I’m also trying to formulate my own short films.

Too much to do. Never enough time.

Back in the game…

I spent this past weekend trying to rest and recover from my cold but I still attended acting class on Sat (which is mandatory) and on Sunday Heather and I went to the gym. What started out as a “light” workout turned into 45min of cardio, light stretching, four sets of medium-heavy squats and three sets of smith-machine hack squats. So much for “taking it easy”. Of course afterwards, I felt completely exhausted and a little sick. So in the afternoon I took a nap and in the evening watched Charlize Theron in “Monster“.

“Monster” for me, was like watching “American History X” - great performances but not necessarily the kind of movie I would like to watch again. I completely understand why Charlize Theron won an Academy Award for her performance. She totally transformed herself into this character which is so completely opposite from her beautiful, ingenue image. This is the kind of work that my acting studio has been preparing us for, even though the majority of us will never get the opportunity to work on such a role.

Once again, it’s Monday and I find myself trying to schedule two different rehearsals for class. I also visited my theatrical agency to drop off a package of headshots and resumes as well as pickup my other proofsheets from my commercial photo session. I then headed over to the photo lab to get the reproductions of my two theatrical color photos. While driving all around town, I realize that my car is STILL having problems even after it was supposedly “fixed”. My car still smokes randomly and I smell burning rubber from time to time. Not to mention that I have yet to receive my driver’s license that I re-ordered because I lost my wallet a few months ago…

No rest for the weary

I’m still sick today but I went to work. I dropped off the car at the auto shop then took a taxi to the Ralph’s near my office to pick up a bunch of anitoxidant juice mixes. I then walked to the office, took some cold medicine and sat down at my desk.

I hate being sick. It gets in the way of everything else I have to do.

Murphy’s Law in full effect.

Today I looked up the origin of Murphy’s Law because right now I feel like my life is a good example of it.

It all started Tues night when I started feeling like I was getting a cold. I was fatigued, my sinuses were congested and I was just about to go to bed early when Heather’s machine (a Mac G4) took a big core dump on her screen in the middle of her work for a deadline she was trying to meet. After restarting the machine and trying to open up her Photoshop file she received the error “unexpected end-of-file was encountered”. Hours worth of work had just been corrupted. So I jumped in and set out to try to recover the file. I ended up working into the late hours of the night and early hours of the morning running Norton Disk Doctor, re-installing OS/X and trying every trick I could to try to recover the file. Nothing. I then decided to try to recover the file on my PC. Well, my PC started crashing and locking up as well. I was so frustrated at 4am that I kicked my computer. Hard. And now the computer won’t even start. Damn.

So at this point, Heather’s machine has major problems with the hard disk which causes her machine to randomly crash and has forced her to save her work every 5 min to a different drive, AND my machine is basically dead ’cause I kicked it and killed it. PLUS I found out our one and only car needs $700 worth of work. PLUS I’m sick, my impacted wisdom teeth are bothering me AND we don’t have the money to deal with all these problems all at once.

Sometimes life is just no fun.

On a positive note, my partner and I gave a very rousing performance of “She Stoops to Conquer” last night in class. Mary (one of our acting coaches) has put us on our feet - which means now we have to incorporate all the blocking and movement. It’s going to be great! Everyone thinks our scene is really funny, just wait till they see the choreographhy!

Memorial Day Weekend

It’s officially summer now.

Heather and I spent Memorial weekend sleeping, working out at the gym and watching DVD’s at home. We didn’t fire up the BBQ, but we did go to the movies yesterday to see “Raising Helen” (Heather’s choice of course). The Grove was pretty packed as expected and everyone was out enjoying their day off. “Raising Helen” was surprsingly only being played on one screen despite all the recent marketing, but seating was filled to capacity. After sitting thorugh a million previews of upcoming teen movies “Rasing Helen” turned out to be pretty good.

Anyway, it’s now Tues, which I keep thinking is Mon and I find myself fatigued - probably from overtraining, fighting a cold and trying to figure out everything that needs to be done this week.
