Moving Headshots - Part II

Two weeks ago I wrote a blog entry about Moving Headshots. In the entry I basically questioned if it’s worth the money. Well since then, I have been contacted by Joan Lauren at Moving Headshots and invited to try it out for myself.

My Moving Headshot session was last Monday. Their office is conveniently located near the 3rd street Promenade in Santa Monica and I was able to park in the Santa Monica Mall parking structure. When I arrived at the office I met Joan who was very friendly and eager to tell me what Moving Headshot is all about. I was also introduced to David Knell who does the editing of the video for the final product. After initial introductions we got down to business. Joan asked me how I am currently being marketed as an actor - what roles am I being sent out for, what roles have I played in the past and what my goals are for my acting career. I always find this to be a somewhat difficult question to answer. In the past I have gone out for a lot of gangster/bad boy roles because of an old headshot I had where I am wearing a leather jacket, head cocked to the side and a bad-boy smile. Now I’m getting older and my agent has told me I’m not 23 anymore and I need to start marketing myself as a young-dad, young-professional type. To add to that, in my two-year acting program the acting studio was always casting me in leading men roles. So ultimately, I don’t know.

Joan agreed with me. She said that usually she can see a person and place them in a certain type of role. With me she said that I have this “hunky” thing going for me, but yet my personality shows a lot more. Then she said she had an idea and “let’s walk”.

She picked up her camera and tripod and we headed outside eventually walking into a parking structure. There she started to setup her camera. I told her that I wasn’t really sure what I should do. Joan said to treat it like acting - move around and experiment with different characters and emotional transitions. So that’s what I did. The whole experience was very enjoyable and Joan was a joy to work with.

A week later Joan sent me a link to the online “proofs”. Here it is:

http://www.movingheadshots.com/proofs/David/

So the question remains - is it worth it?

In my personal opinion I would now say yes, but I would not use this as your only headshot. The reality is that 80% of all casting is now being done online through search engines on actor databases. The casting director is returned a group of thumbnails of actor headshots. The headshots now come in three flavors - black and white, color and color with a “play” icon in the corner indicating that it’s a Moving Headshot. The advantage is that the casting director can now see an example of how you look on film, how you move, a little bit of personality and how you sound. This is a BIG advantage.

The negative part of Moving Headshots is that LA Casting is the only service that currently supports it. And, as most actors are finding out, LA Casting is not the only online casting service in town. The major ones that are definitely being used by casting directors are LA Casting, Actors Access, Players Directory, and Now Casting. What’s interesting is that all the other services are starting to offer video options as well. But for now, you would only be able to use your Moving Headshot on one service.

BUT… if your Moving Headshot on LA Casting gets you an audition, or even a paying gig that you otherwise would not have been considered for, then it is totally worth it.

Eventually, in this ever evolving high-tech world, a “moving headshot” will be the only way to go. Right now it’s still on the cutting edge with Joan Lauren and David Knell blazing the trail.

[8/30 4.30 Update:]

I just spoke with my theatrical agent who looked at the proofs. She said it looks good, but she’s not sure if placing my Moving Headshot on LA Casting will make much of a difference. She said that the majority of commercial casting goes through LA Casting, but the majority of theatrical casting is still done through hardcopy submissions. So at this point she’s not sure I just spend the money to place the Moving Headshot on LA Casting. I still might opt to do it anyway. We’ll see.

I think what would have been helpful is if I spent half the Moving Headshot session targeting theatrical and the other half commercial. My current Moving Headshot is more theatrical. For commercial I would have done a lot more smiling and had a lot more energy. Something to keep in mind for anyone else out there who is thinking of getting their own Moving Headshot.

Horrific Accident

A couple of hours ago I witnessed a horrific accident on my way back from the gym. I was driving down Western and was about to cross 7th street when I noticed a large object in my lane past the intersection. At first I thought it was a large bag of trash and I switched lanes to avoid it. As I passed the object I looked out my window and was shocked to see that it was a man laying in the fetal position IN THE ROAD. I yelled out “OH SHIT!” and immediately started to pull over and call 911 when I heard a loud crash. The worst thought came to mind and I looked to my right horrified to see this black sports car slowing to a stop dragging the man underneath. I SCREAMED, “OH SHIT!” frantically dialing 911 only to get a message saying all lines were busy and to hold. At the same time the security guards of this night club we happened to be in front of came over and started screaming at each other to block traffic and call the police. The driver and passenger of the car that hit the homeless man got out of their car and started talking to the security guard telling him it was an accident and he didn’t realize there was a man laying in the road. Traffic started to back up and another security guard started yelling at the cars to move out of the way. At that moment an unmarked police car came driving by with their lights flashing. The first security guard started waving down the police but the the unmarked police car didn’t stop and kept driving. At this point I had a guard yelling at me telling me to GO! So I drove home, shocked and horrified at what I had just witnessed.

I feel like I could have done more. If only I had known that there was a man laying in the road I could have blocked traffic. The man looked homeless and he also looked hurt. When I passed him and looked at him he had his eyes closed and he wasn’t moving. All I could do was say a few prayers on the way home.

When I arrived at the house I immediately told Heather what happened. I was in shock. We decided the best thing to do was to call the police and try to file a report. When I called the police non-emergency line, the lady took my name and number and told me there were already four units at the scene and she would contact the officers there and tell them what I told her.

This is the worst thing I have ever seen. This is worst than the motorcycle accident my friend had in college and I also happened to witness the entire thing. He was hurt so bad they had to airlift him to a hospital. But he’s OK now.

This definitely makes me think that we need to reach out to the homeless to try to help them out. This was just horrible.

It’s My Prerogative

I just got “talked to” by “the man”. Upper management is complaining about my “extended lunch hours”. It doesn’t help that all upper management sit within a 12-foot radius of my desk. Honestly, I don’t really take a lot of extended lunches. Yes I do have the occasional 2-hour lunch, but 98% of the time the issue is that I take my lunch at least a half hour after management does so to them it looks as if I’ve been gone forever. Even so, I get my work done.

I hate working in an office everyday from 9-6. I’d rather have a 6am call time “on location” somewhere in the valley for a TV show or movie. I’d rather work a 12hour day on a movie set. Blah, blah, blah.

Yes I do recognize that I have a problem with authority. Yes I do recognize that I act like a “diva” sometimes in all the jobs I’ve held. I just have this rebellion inside me that is hard to suppress. But I have to play the game because I’ve got bills to pay.

So for the rest of this week I’ll be showing up early, taking shorter lunch breaks and leaving a half hour later - but I will be wearing sleeve-less shirts :)

The Asian Invasion

I was recently informed about the article in Backstage West about Asians in Hollywood. I think it’s awesome that Asians are starting to get more attention in Hollywood. It’s exciting to see that Hollywood execs are starting to realize that Asians can be “bankable”.

Are we finally busting out of the stereotypes?

I think so. Slowly it’s happening.

Wait ’till they get a load of me!

blah…

I’ve been feeling so un-motivated and un-inspired these past couple of days. Honestly I feel a little lost, stuck in a rut. I think I’m a little burnt out on the struggle of achieving what seems to be impossible. I’m tired of my lame ass day job. I’m tired of working in an office everyday. I’m tired of sitting at my desk, in front of a computer listening to the same 127 songs over and over again. I’m tired of waiting for a casting director to cast me in a commercial, TV show, or movie. I’m tired of not being 180lbs w/ 7% bodyfat. I’m tired of “the journey”. I know I’ve always said that “the journey” is everything in achieving your dreams and goals, but right now my attitude is “f#ck the journey”. I want to begin the journey which starts with me being a working actor who doesn’t need a freaking day job.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not ready to give up. I never will. I’m just tired with a bad attitude.

I’m sitting here at my office desk, drinking black coffee hoping that will give me a lift to more motivation.

Caught up in the mix

I’ve been feeling a little lost since I graduate from my acting program. I was suppose to take an audition technique class but for some reason or another it has been delayed. So in the meantime I’ve been trying to figure out my next move. I’ve been trying to go through the “breakdowns” every day looking for roles that I am right for, then calling my agent to make sure that I have been submitted for those roles. 99% of the time my agent says “yes, you have been submitted”. This is good and bad. It’s good because I’m being submitted. It’s bad because I haven’t been called in for any of the roles I have been submitted for so far. So I’m thinking that maybe I need a manager. A manager may be able to get me into auditions I otherwise wouldn’t be considered for. But I’m not sure this is the right move.

I’ve also been trying to develop ideas for my own movie. The other day I met with one of my old friends who is also an actor and we hashed out a couple of ideas. It’s a good start and I think we could actually do this. I think this is definitely our best bet in gaining visibility as actors. If we can create a good movie showcasing our acting talents this could be our ticket into an acting career. It definitely worked for Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Vin Diesel.

Other than that I’ve been trying not to get too frustrated with the fact that I’m stuck in an office everyday doing boring computer work. I’ve also been working out at the gym like a madman. My trainer has really pushed my intensity level way up. I’m getting good results too. Now if I can only shed 17lbs of bodyfat, I’d be 7% bodyfat and look ripped.

Politics

Yesterday I was driving home on the 10-freeway and noticed that there was absolutely no traffic going in the west-bound lane. It was very surreal. For two minutes I didn’t see a single vehicle pass in the opposite direction. I started to worry that maybe something really bad had happened, but then I saw a police motorcycle go by, then another, then another, and all of a sudden a caravan of buses drove by with John Kerry’s name emblazoned on them. I guess they cleared the freeway for security purposes.

Today I happened to pass a growing group of people with Bush/Cheney signs. I guess the president was in the local area as well.

Honestly, I’ve never really been big on politics. Politics have always seemed so deceptive and tricky. At least in Hollywood, people know that actors are just “acting”. In politics, that’s not the case.

Time to clean the fridge

Today I did the weekly ritual of cleaning the fridge in order to make room for fresh food from the store. What I found, with no suprise, is a fridge full of good intentions - gone bad. Unopened wilted bags of salad, bad broccoli, soggy celery, expired cottage cheese, slimy chicken breasts, half used organic fat free milk and free range eggs. All had perished in favor of convenience from take-out places such as Baja Fresh and Koo Koo Roo. Every week is the same. I go through the fride in dissapointment of myself and vow that this week, we’ll do better. We’ll eat healthier and cook more, which in turn will save us money, make us healthier, and not waste food that starving children in China could eat (as my parents would say.) So once again, here is my vow - This week, we will not let our groceries go to waste. We will not be lazy and we will cook our meals. Now that it is in writing, maybe, just maybe, we’ll do better.

We are also looking into taking some cookng classes at Sur La Table. Maybe that will help as well…

Brush Fire, Crack Van - Another Day in LA

Heather and I drove out to Burbank tonight to eat “suburban food” at Black Angus. The food was decent and with a $33 dinner coupon for two people it was a great deal. After stuffing ourselves on appetizers, prime rib, potatoes, chocolate pie and washing it down with (weak) margaritas, we headed home.

Driving on the 5 freeway we were crossing the interchange to the 110 freeway when to our left appeared flames burning up the hillside of the freeway. We were shocked. We had never seen brush fire so close to downtown LA. We continued to drive cautiously and noticed another hillside that was on fire. It was wierd because there were no firetrucks, or sirens, or helicopters. Nothing.

Eventually we passed the burning hillsides and merged into the dense traffic fighting our way back home.

When we pulled up to the house, we noticed an older van parked on the side of our house and someone was getting out of the passenger side. From the way this guy was acting, he seemed high off his mind. The van then pulled away and the other guy got into a car and drove off as well.

We are pretty sure that they were smoking crack in that van. It wouldn’t be the first time. A couple months ago a similar van was engulfed in flames and the police came with firetrucks to put it out. Turns out they were smoking crack in that van and it caught fire.

Just another day in LA.
