Turning Dreams into Reality in 2006

Anthony Robbins has put together a short seminar and posted it on the internet to help you turn your reams into reality. I’ve listened to it and it’s good stuff. Listen and get motivated now.

A Model for Success

If I were to pick a model for success Robert Rodriguez would be at the top of my list. According to the new Jan/Feb 2006 Men’s Health article “Take It From Me”, Robert Rodriguez has it all:

  • In 1992 he parlayed his $7k indie movie “El Mariachi” into a succssful and very lucrative Directing career and production studio.
  • He is both creative and highly technical, he can do it all, he’s a jack of all trades
  • His high tech Troublemaker Studios is also his residence and he lives outside Hollywood
  • He successfully balances work and home life - his wife produces with him and his kids collaborate crreatively
  • He’s always creating
  • He lives, works and thinks outside the box
  • He says, “There are no limits except for the ones you create for yourself”
  • He’s achieved my top goals: creative freedom and financial freedom. He’s turned his “work” into “play”, he balances his family and work and he’s his own boss. Now that’s success.

    Two More Commercial Auditions

Today I had two more chances at landing national commercials for this year - 1st National Bank and Verizon. I felt comfortable at both auditions so now it’s just a waiting game. The callbacks for Verizon are the 28th and 29th so I will know soon enough.

As this year quickly comes to a close I find myself swamped with work. It’s the whole game of balancing life responsibilities with your dreams. Right now I’m working as much freelance as I can get to pay the bills. It’s frustrating and exhausting. But I know I can’t get caught up in the rat race. I’ll never get ahead. I’ve learned that we need to think bigger and work smarter, not harder. That means investing in ourselves first financially, emotionally and creatively. That means I’m also really working on my self confidence everyday to achieve that breakthrough I need which will transform my acting to the next level.

I always go back to m example of JK Rowling. If she didn’t invest in her creative writing and instead got caught up in the rat race struggling to stay financially afloat, she still might be struggling today instead of being the owner of the billion dollar Harry Potter creative franchise that she created.

Get the Edge: Day 7 - Finding Purpose

Today I listened to the last day of Anthony Robbins “Get the Edge” series. In this final session Anthony Robbins talks about dreams, goals, destiny and a purpose filled life. When we are kids we dream about the future: who we want to be, what we want to do and what our life would be like. What happened to those dreams? Did we accomplish them? Did they change? What stops us from creating new dreams and goals?

Personally I’ve always been a big dreamer. My dreams would change year by year. I wanted to grow up to be a spy , security specialist, pilot, inventor, scientist, electrical engineer, artificial intelligence researcher, computer technology specialist, stock broker/investor, entrepreneur, special effects designer, a dancer, a model and now an actor. I’ve never stopped dreaming and I will never stop going after my dreams.

The last thing Anthony Robbins talks about is finding your purpose. He asks you to think about a time when you were most happy in your life. When you were doing something that engaged every fiber of your being and you felt fully confident and satisified doing. Now think about the essence of what it was you did. Now with this essence you can find your purpose in life. My example goes back to my high school senior talent show. Up till the talent show a lot of people knew me as the shy, quiet (albeit, flashy dresser) Asian student in class. Then at the talent show I busted out a self choreographed hip-hop dance routine which shocked the audience into chanting my name. It was a magical moment I will never forget. The essence of this experience and all my great experiences of performing for an audience is that emotional connection. Being able to connect with other people and inspire them or entertain them. This is now my purpose in life.

Ultimately what I like about his message is that he emphasizes giving to others and enriching peoples lives around you no matter what your purpose is. To “Get the Edge” is to not be self centered, but instead to invest in yourself so that you may have the abundance to give to others.

I HIGHLY recommend this series to anyone who really wants to create change in their life. There is a lot of practical information and exercises that are invaluable in creating positive change.

Get the Edge: Day 5 and 6

I listened to both Day 5 and Day 6 of Anthony Robbins Get the Edge series today. Day 5 deals with negative emotions and learning how to use your emotions to take positive action instead of letting your emotions block you. The first step involves becoming more aware of your emotions and identifying what your emotion is. Then changing your perception of the situation or change your procedure of obtaining your objective. The last step is taking a positive step in obtaining your objective.

This 3 step process applies to acting as well. When a character interacts with you, you determine how you feel about the character and what they just said, then you determine the action you will take to accomplish your characters objective. Finally you take that step towards your objective.

On Day 6 Anthony Robbins talks about wealth building. The first step in building wealth is changing your psychology and motivating yourself to take action and build wealth. The rest of his advice can be summed up in one sentence: always invest in yourself first. That is actually the underlying theme of the entire series. In building wealth he suggests first determining what being “wealthy” would mean to you. His example of defining wealth is determinng how much it would cost per year to have all your bills paid. Then imagine that you automatically received this amount of money every year, plus a little extra more. Would you consider yourself wealthy? Also he urges you to think about this: even if you made 20 million a year but never had time to enjoy yourself or spend time with your family, would you truly be wealthy?

What I really like about this series is that Anthony Robbins also emphasizes giving. This is no get-rich quick scheme. It’s about being smart with your money and disciplining yourself to invest in yourself first by saving money in a diverse portfolio of slow growth and medium/high risk investments. And, like always, it’s about thinking different and thinking positive. Once you’ve made wealth building and being wealthy a “must” instead of a “should”, then you will do everything possible to achieve that goal. And you will.

    Living in the positive

I feel good today. I feel like I’m releasing the need to be someone different than who I am. That I need to walk around wearing a mask. Even at the gym where I usually try to act all “hard” and unfriendly like I have something to prove - I actually walked around engaging people with a smile. It felt good. It’s a refreshing state of mind than feeling inadequate and judging myself against the muscle heads in the gym.

    happy cookie party!

This is a belated entry but I wanted to give a shout out to Happy and Brett and thank them for throwing another great holiday cookie party last weekend! I think it’s awesome that Happy takes the time once a year to bake a-bizillion cookies for all her friends and family. After several years of being fortunate to be invited, Happy’s cookie party has become part of our tradition for the holidays. It’s amazing how fast time has past. It seems like only yesterday when we all were working for the same dot-com consultancy in Brentwood. We were all young and single. That’s also the time I met my wife. Eventually, after we all jumped to another company Happy would actually play an integral part in getting me together with my wife (and would also drive my drunk ass home after the flamboyant millionaire/CEO got me plastered off of Patron tequila at the dot-com happy hour bar in our building). We owe Happy a whole lot more than cookies! Happy you’re awesome. Thanks again for the awesome cookies! Happy Holidays to you and Brett!

    It’s Working

I think it’s working. I’ve been following some of Anthony Robbins suggestions and have been spending time every morning being thankful for everything I have going for me right now, plus I’ve also done the mirror exercises, reassuring myself of who I am, all the positive attributes I do have and what I have to offer to the world. It reminded me of a scene in “Cool Runnings” where one of the stronger characters forces his teammate to look at himself in the mirror and say “I see strength, I see power, I see a bad mother f*cker who won’t take no for an answer”. I also tried anchoring feelings of confidence by remembering those times and events in my life where I was full of confidence - even cocky. I then anchored it to a physical stimulus. But later I realized that just thinking about triggering the anchored feelings triggered the feelings without having to use the physical trigger. I also started reading up on the Sedona Method which teaches people to release negative emotions. I think this is a very important component in gaining self confidence and if I’m able to release the negative thoughts and emotions related to self-doubt, I will definitely have confidence.

On a different note, I decided to try eating a handful of raisins with some gatorade before my workout tonight. It definitely did the trick! I had great energy and motivation to push myself pretty hard.

    David Chiu - the Interrogator

The other day I received a DVD copy of the indie film I worked on in Washington DC. Written by first time writer/director Raghav Vajjhala the film is titled “Mother’s Day Special” and combines women, sunglasses, guns, commercialism and violence all on Mother’s Day. I was honestly surprised at the quality of the production and editing. It totally made the film work. Raghav was smart to hire a small professional production company to actually shoot and produce his short film. The end result makes this quirky, surreal, dark comedy film work and it’s amazing how well it all came together knowing that every shot and setup was rushed because of limited time constraints. They did well with the footage they got.

Here’s my little part in the film as the interrogator.
