Triumph
By David Chiu
The loud sounds of chatter and jazz music intermingled in the dimly lit space as I struggled to converse with my friends from acting class while taking bites of typical bar food and sips of strong alcoholic cocktails. We were at BB Kings at Universal Citywalk having some fun eating, drinking and talking. From across the room I noticed a gorgeous blonde wearing tight black jeans and a tight black t-shirt approach our table carrying roses in a basket. As she approached, I realized it was Anne, who was also in our class. She happened to be working at Universal Citywalk, noticed all of us sitting at the table and decided to say “hi”. After briefly talking to one of the other girls at the table, she waved and departed.
“Wow!” I said aloud. “I would love to go out with her.”
“She feels the same way” my friend Nita replied.
My heart skipped. I couldn’t believe it. This girl was way out of my league. She was a hot blonde actress. Why would she be interested in me?
“Every time she comes over to my place, she watches the tape of you singing that night and can’t stop talking about you.” Nita continued.
I smiled as the memory replayed in my head. We were all in class and LaShun, our acting coach, decided that we should all just get up and sing a song a capella - just to work through nerves and try something different. Now of course, I had to show off. I had never sung R&B in front of a group of people so I decided to just let it go. I sang a sexy, seductive song that was a current R&B hit and had all the girls screaming and hollaring. That night, they were feeling me, and it felt good. I fronted the mac-daddy vibe BIG TIME and it actually worked. I surprised the hell out of everyone and was very pleased with myself.
So the choice was up to me. I could be bold and go after this girl and ask her out, or I could be that whimpy, shy guy, and just fantasize of what could be. This was my chance to be bold. So I took it. I got up out of my seat and left the restaurant looking for her. After a couple of minutes I found her down the street selling her roses on the crowded walkway. I approached her nervous as hell.
“Hey Anne”.
“Hi David. What are you doing down here. I thought you were having dinner with the rest of the guys.”
“Well, I wanted to see if you wanted to go out to dinner with me sometime.”
“Sure. I’d love to. Let me give you my number.”
As she scribbled her number on a scrap piece of paper, I could feel my nervous energy like electricity bouncing throughout my body. This was incredible! I was actually going to go out on a date with this sexy vixen, and she was loving my R&B flavor.
This night had to be perfect. I had made reservations at a hot new sushi restaurant in Santa Monica and I dressed up in my most trendy Melrose clothes with my leather jacket, leather boots and long hair. Tonight was my chance to find a real relationship. And then something clicked inside my head.
Just be yourself. She will like you better if you are just that small town guy. Be real. Don’t worry about the fact that you drive an old beat-up Mazda 323 hatchback and live in a bare bones studio apartment. She will like you more for who you really are.
I arrived at the front of her apartment and called her on my cell.
“I’ll be right down” she said.
I watched the front door of her apartment building and felt like it was a movie. The door slowly opened and this sexy blonde comes strolling out in black leather boots, leather pants, tight black shirt, and sleek leather jacket. She slowly tosses her long blonde hair across her shoulders as she shoots a sexy smile my way. All I could do was stare. I felt so inadequate. I should have rented a Porsche or something. I told myself as I presented her with a bouquet of flowers I had picked up from Ralphs.
As we drove to the restaurant, the conversation was light. We never had really talked to each other in class so we were just taking the moment to find out the basics. You know, “where are you from, how long have you been acting, smalltalk, etc”.
When we arrived at the restaurant, it was packed. Luckily I made reservations. As we walked through the restaurant to our table, we looked like a Hollywood couple. Everyone was staring at us. Actually, they were staring at this sexy blonde in black leather that I was with. To impress her, I ordered the spicy crickets as an appetizer and ate them all. She wasn’t impressed. Luckily, she wasn’t repulsed either. All throughout dinner I tried to be funny and ask questions to get to know her better. Instead, she would make comments like “your skin looks so soft” as she would physically touch me and flirt with me. I felt like a fish out of water. Things were going well though, or so I thought. I was still getting a good vibe from her. She seemed like she was having a good time.
After dinner, I drove her back to her apartment since she had an audition early the next morning. As we walked back to her apartment she stopped and turned to kiss me. I was thrown for a second because honestly, I wasn’t expecting it. Here was this hot blonde who was totally into me. She started kissing my neck and lightly licked my ear. I froze. “oh shit! this girl really wants me. but I’ve been eating spicy crickets all night and my breath probably stinks so I don’t know if I should kiss her back. What underwear am I wearing? Am I wearing boxers or briefs? Are there any holes or stains on them?” All these thoughts flew through my mind as I stood there frozen.
The moment passed. Game over. I choked. She released her passionate hold and walked towards her gate. “Maybe we could do this again?” I said. She turned and smiled then disappeared into her apartment.
“She was expecting a playa” I said to myself. She was taken by this fantasy version of myself I had created, but I could not live up to it.
She was expecting a seduction. I was trying to be a charming, non-pretentious small town guy. I felt like an idiot. But now I knew I was looking for something real. Something lasting. I was looking for someone who would like, even love, the real me. The silly, goofy, small-town guy who sometimes masquerades as GQ Smooth.
