Getting Ripped With XFlowsion

At the beginning of the year H and I were lucky enough to be chosen to participate in a new yoga/fitness system created by Eric Paskel called XFlowsion. For 30 days we did intense yoga/dance/martial arts 4 times a week and ate according to the XFlowsion diet (whole grains, veggies, fruits, etc, etc). By the end of the program I lost 11lbs. A month after the program I dropped another 9lbs and ended up at 163lbs / 14.5% bodyfat. Well Christmas has come early this year because Eric has moved to LA from Michigan and has offered 3 weeks of free XFlowsion classes to those who participated in the original program. The XFlowsion commercial will be re-shot, AND Eric will be opening up his own gym sometime in Jan/Feb.

So H and I are back in XFlowsion boot-camp again. We started Friday. The schedule is Tues/Fri/Sat/Sun which means we just completed our 3rd XFlowsion class today. All I can say is that XFlowsion is one hell of a workout. H and I have been doing yoga at home and at various yoga centers, but nothing compares to Eric’s classes. By the end of each class I am absolutely exhausted. I never sweat as much in any other workout than XFlowsion. It takes a lot of concentration, strength, flexibility and endurance to get through his classes. It’s intense. But it’s as intense as you want it to be because Eric is so mellow. Each class is completely different too (other than the typical yoga down-dogs and chattarungas mixed in with everything). So now I’m starting off at my new weight of 163lbs/15% bodyfat and I’m hoping to get down to 10% bodyfat by Christmas. That means I need to lose 5% of my weight in bodyfat which would be 8lbs. To accomplish this I’m going to try to be even more precise with my nutrition. Using the Harris-Benedict principle, I can assess my basal metabolic rate — also known as BMR:

Men:
66 + (6.3 x weight in pounds) + (12.9 x height in inches) - (6.8 x age in years)

66 + (6.3 x 162) + (12.9 x 71) - (6.8 x 34) = 1771

I need to multiply this by 40% and add the total since I normally work out 3-4 times a week.

This means I need to eat 2,479 calories a day just to maintain my current body weight. So I need to create a caloric deficit be reducing calories. 1lb is roughly 3500 calories. So if I decrease my calories by 500/day I will lose 1lb a week. If I can also burn 500 calories a day I could lose 2lbs a week - which would put me 2lbs away from being 10% bodyfat in 3 weeks. The big challenge is that it is the holidays and H and I love food. That means on Thanksgiving we will not be following the diet. But luckily, Eric will have an XFlowsion class Friday morning to make up for our dietary “sins”.

Out of curiosity I asked Google how many calories Bikram yoga burns (it’s the closest I could think to XFlowsion). I know it it’s going to be different for everybody since it depends on your practice intensity and a lot of other factors, but from what I could find it sounds like it’s possible to burn 600-700 calories in an hour. So XFlowsion four times a week would be 2400 calories burned at the least. I will also be hitting the weights hard at the gym twice a week and have one day to rest and recover.

During this training period I also need to make sure I eat enough calories to keep my metabolism running high. That means I need to eat approx 400 calories a meal 5 times a day which would put me at 2000 calories which is roughly the 500 caloric deficit I need to burn fat.

So last time I lost 11lbs in 4 weeks doing XFlowsion 4x week and lifting on and off for that period of time while moderately following the XFlowsion diet. That means I should have no problem hitting 10% bodyfat in 3 weeks.

I hate my picture in the XFlowsion commercial.

I just checked out the XFlowsion website and found this:

That’s me at 174lbs 17% bodyfat down from 185lbs 22% bodyfat. I hate that photo. I just look fat. Here’s a better photo of me at 160lbs 14% bodyfat 3 months and 14lbs lighter after this commercial was shot.

*Results not typical :)

XFlowsion DVD’s now available!

The XFlowsion DVD series is now available at xflowsion.com! What is XFlowsion? XFlowsion is an awesome mix of yoga, martial arts and dance taught by Eric Paskel. It’s perfect for people who have never done yoga before (like me). I personally lost 11lbs in 30 days by participating in a XFlowsion boot camp 4 times a week taught by Mr. XFlowsion himself - Eric Paskel. I’m now a yoga convert and have continued to take yoga classes (because there are no official XFlowsion classes in LA) and have lost an additional 10lbs. What’s unique about XFlowsion is the combination of isometric and plyometric moves along with the yoga stretching and aerobic moves which create an awesome way to stretch and strengthen core muscles while you get lean. Eric is also a great motivator and teacher with a straight-up no bullshit approach. I just hope that comes through in the DVD series. Much respect due.

Happy Easter With Sprinkles on Top

Since today was Easter, we decided to have our once-a-month cheat meal(s) today. It started with a box of Sprinkles cupcakes - our new favorite indulgence. Heather couldn’t help but to do a little cupcake tasting with milk, cutting tiny slices out of each cupcake to determine which one she liked the most. This irritated me so I grabbed an unharmed Red Velvet and chowed down. The cream cheese topping mixed with the moist red cake was absolutely delicious. After finishing the Red Velvet I then grabbed the Easter themed Carrot cupcake with a cute little bunny on top and devoured it in 4 bites. By this time I could feel the refined sugar rushing through my veins and I knew it was time to stop. Around 1pm we went out to lunch to Locando Del Lago. We were a little hesitant about the quality of food since we had a mediocre experience a couple years back, but our other restaurant choices were all booked full. We both decided to order the Easter 3-course meal with wine pairings. It started off with smoked ham and candied fruit, then continued to a delicious veal tortellini in creme sauce. For the third course I chose the lamb and Heather chose the pike, both which were really good. For dessert we shared a flourless chocolate cake with hazlenut gelato. Overall a pretty good Italian Easter meal. A few hours later we decided to go to Wendy’s for our last cheat meal of the day.

Overall, a very good Easter celebration in food.

Tomorrow it’s back to strict eating. I’ll probably start with a bowl of oatmeal and an apple for breakfast then stay low carb for the rest of the day. I’m hoping to shred 6 more lbs of bodyfat. Then I’ll be at 10% bodyfat which is my goal. I’m just worried that I’m getting too skinny (which I never thought could even be a possibility). Soon I’ll start my next challenge of getting stronger and adding 10lbs of muscle while keeping my bodyfat around 10%.

A Month After XFlowsion…

It’s been more than a month since the XFlowsion program ended and the good news is that Heather and I have continued to get leaner. I am now at 163lbs and 14.5% bodyfat.

That’s close to 20lbs I’ve lost by doing yoga, budokan, eating lots of veggies, staying away from sugar, white carbs, cheese, and only having one cheat day a month. The only bad thing is that we tend to eat a lot of burritos from Poquito Mas (Vegetarian burrito with guacamole, salsa, no cheese and added steak - absolute favorite!). Granted, Poquito Mas uses all fresh ingredients, but the white tortilla is suppose to be on the “forbidden” list. Guess it doesn’t matter since we’re losing weight at a steady pace. I find it amazing that I’ve lost 20lbs and I’m still not ripped. I haven’t been this light in a very long time but I’m determined to get down to 10% bodyfat.

XFlowsion Day 30

Goal: Leaner (accomplished)

Final weigh-in is 171lbs. That’s 11lbs less than when I started. Going through this challenge and participating in the XFlowsion program with Eric Paskel has really been incredible! In the last 30 days of doing XFlowsion 4 days a week and following a sensible diet, I’ve become a yoga convert. I’ve never really done yoga before this program but the combination of yoga poses with isometric and plyometric moves along with martial arts and dance is killer. It’s cardio and stretching and toning combined in one accessible program. Heather and I are totally inspired by this program and are determined to stay on the path of health and fitness through different yoga and movement classes along with weightlifting and eating healthy. Plus, I still could lose another 10lbs to be completely ripped!

The XFlowsion DVDs should be out very soon and I encourage everyone to check them out!

XFlowsion Day 27

Yesterday I was on location in Santa Ana shooting a commercial. The craft service table was filled full of temptations - donuts, candy and soda. I poured myself a cup of coffee which was sitting right next to the chocolate covered donuts and wasn’t even tempted. That big bowl of organic raisin bran with soymilk I had for breakfast kept me full. But lunchtime came around and the PA started taking orders for IN-N-OUT. Mmmmmm… A double-double w/ fries… didn’t even cross my mind. Instead I went to my car and grabbed a MetRx shake which I pounded and then grabbed an apple from the craft service table. By that time the food had arrived and the air was filled with the smell of delicious fresh-cut french fries. Everyone was stuffing their faces with burgers and fries and I distracted myself by talking to one of the other actors who also abstained from the burgers and fries. We wrapped around 5pm and I got back in my car, pounded another MetRx shake and battled traffic for an hour and a half getting back to the house. By that time I was starving and we decided to go to Poquito Mas for burritos sans rice and cheese and sour cream. That did break my “no carbs after 11am” rule for this week, but I didn’t care at that point. Afterwards we stopped by Trader Jo’s to pickup some groceries. At this point I was exhausted but Heather was determined to get to the gym for a workout. I really didn’t want to go, but I couldn’t let her go by herself at night so I dragged my tired ass to the gym and forced myself to go through a back routine. I was proud and Heather’s determination and motivation to get to the gym because I could’ve just gone home and turned on the TV. We also made a pact on the way back that we would both stay motivated and keep going to yoga classes, working out and eating clean. By the time we got back to the house we crashed into bed around 11pm. Then this morning we discovered we had totally forgot about the groceries in the trunk! DOH!!! Well, luckily we only bought two items that needed to be refrigerated/frozen but that goes to show you how tired we were.

XFlowsion Day 23

There are 7 days left in my personal 30-day challenge to get leaner. My strategy for this last week is to stay focused and push myself as hard as I can in these last few workouts in this challenge. I’m hoping to lose another 2lbs before the 30 days are up. To do that I’m going to be super strict on my diet and only eat complex carbs in the morning (along with a protein of course). The rest of the day I will eat lean protein sources and lots of veggies. I will also try to drink more than a gallon of water a day and will be very careful of my sodium intake.

This yoga class/program I’ve been in has really been incredible. I don’t think I’ve ever sweat this much in any workout in my entire life. Heather and I have both grown to be yoga converts and after this 30-day challenge we intend to continue eating clean and going to yoga classes. As for our diet, a lot of other programs we’ve tried allowed for one cheat meal a week where you could eat absolutely anything. We are going to change that to one cheat meal a month and make it a special night out. So instead of eating fast food and ice cream once a week we will go to a really nice restaurant once a month and enjoy ourselves. Since Valentines Day is right after my 30-day fitness challenge is up, it is a perfect time for us to enjoy an evening out and indulge in rich food, chocolate and wine.

Food log

  • 1 1/2 cups of organic raisin bran w/ plain soy milk
  • Think Thin protein bar
  • 2 Trader Jo’s Chile Chicken-Lime burger patties
  • 2 Trader Jo’s Chile Chicken-Lime burger patties
  • Poquito Mas bean and steak burrito w/ no cheese (and no rice)

XFlowsion Day 19

Start weight: 182lbs 20% bodyfat
Current weight: 174lbs 17% bodyfat
Ultimate weight: 180lbs 10% bodyfat

Days left in this challenge: 11

This week I haven’t been able to get to the gym for my weight-lifting routine, but I continue to eat clean with little to no cravings whatsoever - although there was one night I was smelling french fries, or fried chicken when I was out and about. The hardest thing is nutrition and eating 5-6 meals a day. For a while we were cooking meals and I would bring leftovers for lunch, but then Heather and I got really busy so I’ve started eating veggie omelets from Good Stuff or going to Whole Foods and getting Huevos Rancheros. For lunch I’ve been walking over to Ralph’s for their salad bar. I also have stocked up my desk with raw almonds and MetRx carb-conscious protein shakes. This way I always have a healthy option to snack on between meals. I can already start to see the beginnings of a ripped midsection but I still have a good 10lbs of bodyfat to lose before I’m totally ripped. So I’m going to try to push extra hard in yoga “fusion” class, drink extra water and supplement with green tea extract and 1 cup of coffee before class to try to accelerate more fat loss.
